TASK A: MATERIAL SELF MODULE

Debit Card Challenge
Maximum limit: 500,000 pesos.

List of my possible expenditures:

B Laptop
B Facial
B Axie Management Team
C Expand and fund our baking business
C New phone for my father
C Clothes for my sisters
H 6 months billing payments
H Renovate our rooms
O Collaborate UNICEF Philippines, my favorite charity work and organize an outreach
program to help the beneficiaries.

Reflection:

1.) What did you feel as you do the Debit Card Challenge?

– Being a practical person, I rarely buy things for myself because I don’t feel the
need, but if I were given a gift this big, I would really use it the way I that I know
would respond to the needs of the people around me, and would benefit those who
really needed it. Every time I have money, I only choose three things to buy for
myself, which I can use in long term and one thing that can make me feel good about
myself. The rest would be put to suffice and help my family and if there’s extra, I
tend to give it to children especially those who belong to the marginalized sectors.
2.) Which among the items in your list you like most? Why?

– My most favorite item in the list that I made was the expansion of our baking
business. We’ve invested a lot of effort and love to this business ever since the
pandemic started and we were overwhelmed by the support that we got from the
people who buy from us. So, I want to further bring the name of our business into a
larger prospect, a broader range of customers where we can serve a lot in just a day
because at that time it would not just be my aunt, sisters and I who bake but we could
afford to have new employees that could help us. In that way, we can continue doing
what we love to do while earning and giving back to people.

3.) What are the effects of Materialism on youth?

– In this materialistic society, people my age are often blinded by the material
products that surround them. Once they handle cash, they tend to shop more and save
less. More likely, what they shop is more on sufficing their wants and not their needs.
They are likely to spend everything on themselves rather than to choose from a wide
variety of options that can help the deprived. Youth are becoming more materialistic
nowadays because they are brand conscious and always try to look more attractive
towards other. This affects the way they view the reality. This impacts their way of
thinking that they need to appease the standards of everybody in order to fit in. This is
where the parents’ role comes into play. Parents should always monitor their children
that this is not how the reality works. Spending time with your family grants you the
emotional and social support that matter. Through this, you will always be reminded
of what your priorities should be, and not just focus on the material things that won’t
help you grow and develop as a better person.
