CLASSIFICATIONS OF ART
PRE-DISCUSSION
Art is the product of man’s imagination and creativity. Just like the history of
mankind, art has grown from a very simple into more complexes. With the fast discovery
of new technology, it also brought development to art.
What to expect:
Art fills important needs in our daily lives. Art means all things wonderful that
people use and those that makes us happy and fulfilled.
The history of the classification of arts is complicated for several reasons but
chiefly because the idea has changed. The classical idea differed from ours in at least
two respects. First, it was concerned not with the products of art but with the act of
producing them and in particular the ability to produce them. Second, it embraced not
only “artistic ability” but any human ability to produce things so long as it was regular
production based on rules. Art was a system of regular methods of making or doing. To
make us understand art, this category includes work of arts that are created primarily for
aesthetic purposes.
The various classifications of arts includes: fine arts, visual arts, plastic arts,
performance arts, applied arts, and decorative arts.
