1. Why do you think the catholic church was so against Rizal? What did Rizal do to deserve their
disagreement?
Fr. Javier de Pedro's book "Rizal Through a Glass Darkly" recognizes that Rizal had real gripes against
priests, based on experiences that offended his sense of social justice; he traces his path from his early
faith to his estrangment from the Catholic religion to his redemption well before execution.
It is clear that Catholic Church needs judicial oversight over public opinion. In the face of allegations, the
Catholic Church is considered guilty, her side aired and heard on matters, and her opponents are more
scrutinized than her supporters.
That is the pattern.
The justified complaints Rizal has made against clergymen's imperfections are worthy of consideration.
This is important and the reality is important. An organization of the Philippine culture, which plays an
important role in the lives of Philippinos, is not the values that Rizal has struggled for by propagating
blatant lies and outright fabrications.
And because his truth was strongly advocated for by patriots, the Catholic Church cannot bear that.
2. Why do you think the opinion of the catholic church about the matter is heard or given
importance in the law-making process, when in fact the church and government in the Philippines
is independent and separate?
The Rizal bill was not only vigorously criticized by church associations and priests. In retaliation to the
Rizal Bill, Catholic schools around the country united. It occurred that a lot of Catholic schools vowed to
shut down if the Rizal law was passed. The main proponent, Senator Recto, replied by saying that, if the
company shut down and collectivize, it will actually be the administration to take over of those colleges.
The permission of faith to influence legislation restricts the liberties of citizens. Religions enabling
legislation to effect imposes religions on the selfless. Although some rules – such as anti-murder laws,
anti-theft – also contain fundamental moral and ethical principles, the state is in charge to address issues
that are patently ordinated in religious scriptures.
However, it is necessary to be aware of the true significance of separation between Church and State.
Otherwise, the Church can be silenced by the misconception. In history, the unity between Church and
State was substituted by the division of Church and State with an emergence of social democracy and
secular States. In spite of the fact that it ended not only state patronage, but also influence and authority
over the church by state it lost its special privilege as a disguised blessing. Paradoxically, governmental
repression of religion is currently exercised only in Communist states – but without state funding or
sponsorship. The church thus benefits from the division between the Church and the state because it
prevents the Church from state influence and intervention.
We scrutinize the shadows and the sun in our assessment of the Catholic Church as in the assessment of
our heroes. The question is not just about the stature of Catholicism or the glory of Rizal. It is about our
institutions and heroes getting a more real, more comprehensive image of our own as a country.
Otherwise, as a people, we would not know our strengths and weaknesses. We would not be able to make
wise choices about our future and our successes and failures.
