ATOX RAW MILL - HEAT BALANCE

GROUP WORK

Case: You have an ATOX 40 raw mill. Over the last couple of months you have
observed that

- the spillage through the nozzle ring has increased.

- the output has decreased and the specific energy consumption for the
mill has increased.

- vibrations has increased.

The reason might be that the air flow through the nozzle ring (and the mil) has
become too low.

Based on fan power consumption and fan diagram you have estimated the air
flow through the mill fan at 410,000 kg/h, which is approximately the designed air
flow. Previously, this airflow used to be satisfactory. However, the false air might
have increased, and the air flow through the nozzle ring has consequently
decreased. One way to get an indication of the amount of false air is to establish
a heat balance, with an air flow at the mill fan equal to the air flow determined on
the basis of fan power.

Figures used for heat balance:

Feed rate, t/h 235

% water in feed 4.0
% water in raw meal 0.5
Temp. at mill inlet, °C 205
Temp. before fan, °C 80
Feed temperature, °C 30
Water injection, kg/h 4000
Temp. of water, °C 30
Mill motor, kW 1800
Spec. heat, material, kCal/kg°C 0.21
Spec. heat, air at mill inlet, kCal/kg°C 0.245

Try to estimate the amount of false air (% of air at mill inlet).

P.S.: Radiation loss from the mill can be ignored.

ATOX RAW MILL - HEAT BALANCE

ANSWERS TO GROUP WORK

To be calculated:

Air volume at mill inlet: Q, kg/h

False from mill inlet to mill fan: f, % of Q

Heat input:

Hot air: Q × (205 - 80°C) × 0.245 kCal/kg°C = 30.63 × Q [kCal/h]

Grinding heat: 0.95 × 1800 kW × 860 kCal/kWh = 1.47 × 106 [kCal/h]

Total: 30.63 × Q + 1.47 × 106 [kCal/h]

Heat consumption:

Evaporation of water
- injected: 4000 kg/h
- from feed: 8270 kg/h
- total: 12270 kg/h
Heat for heating and evaporation of water:
12270 kg/h × ((70 + 539) - (100 - 80)×0.48) = 7.35 × 106 [kCal/h]

Heating of material:
235000 kg/h × 0.96 × (80 - 30°C) × 0.21 kCal/kg°C =
2.37 × 106 [Kcal/h]

Heating of false air:

f/100 × Q × (80 - 30°C) × 0.24 kCal/kg°C =f/100 × Q × 12 [kCal/h]

Total: f/100 × Q × 12 + 9.73 × 106 [kCal/h]

Heat balance:

a) 30.63 × Q + 1.47 × 106 = f/100 × Q × 12 + 9.73 × 106

Air balance:

b) Q + f/100 × Q + 12270 kg/h = 410000 kg/h

a) and b) give:

Q = 306 t/h (220000 Nm³/h, 116 Nm³/h/kW)

f = 30%
