Definitions of Guidance:

“Guidance involves personal help given by someone; it is designed to assist the individual to decide
where he wants to go, what he wants to do and how best he can accomplish his purpose”. —Jones

“Guidance is a means of helping individuals to understand and use


wisely the educational, vocational and personal opportunities they
have or can develop and as a form of systematic assistance whereby
students are aided in achieving satisfactory adjustment to school and

EVALUATION
According to Hanna- “The process of gathering and interpreted evidence changes in the behaviour
of all students as they progress through school is called evaluation”.
Muffat says – “Evaluation is a continuous process and is concerned with than the formal academic
achievement of pupils. It is interpreted in the development of the individual in terms of desirable
behavioural change relation of his feeling, thinking, and actions”.

Evaluation of Guidance programme


Evaluation in guidance and counselling refers to measures used to assess the effectiveness of
guidance and counselling programme.
Evaluation of guidance and counselling programme not only helps in developing effective and
meaningful guidance and counselling programme but also helps counsellors enhance skills.

OBJECTIVES OF THE EVALUATION OF GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING PROGRAMME


The basic objectives of the evaluation of guidance programme are the following such
as:
1. The activities planned in the programme are covered.
2. The needs of various kind of groups of the school have been met.
3. The programme has been successful in helping the students to solve their various problems.
4. Various groups of students have been assessed adequately and results have been conveyed
to the students in proper manner.
5. Students feel the usefulness of guidance services rendered to them.

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION OF GUIDANCE PROGRAMME


1. The purposes of evaluation should be stated clearly in terms of desire change.
2. Evaluation should increase efficiency in the field appraised by determining how well the
programme objectives are being achieved.
3. Measurements, research, interpretation and analysis are indispensable.
4. Student’s satisfaction with counselling judgment.
5. Change and development of attitudes toward vocation or other problems .

WHY TO EVALUATE A GUIDANCE PROGRAMME?


 To ascertain how far the aims of Guidance programme has been achieved?
 To judge the relative effectiveness with which goals have been attained in relation to
standards
 To determine the impact if the guidance program on students, faculty, parents and school
climate
 To identify effective components of the program.
 To eliminate or improve less effective components of the program
 To discover and devise effective means to bring improvement in Guidance programme
 To ascertain if Guidance do anything good?
 To encourage Guidance worker or school counsellor for self evaluation.
 To study changing needs of adolescents and to meet those needs accordingly.

APPROACH TO EVALUATION OF GUIDANCE PROGRAMME?


Shertzer & stone
Shertzer and stone have discussed following three approaches for the evaluation of
guidance programme.
1. Survey method
2. Experimental method
3. Case study method
SURVEY METHOD
It is most frequently used approach. It involves following three steps:
 Select pre-determine criteria to inventory
 Collect evidence of services being offered.
 Make judgment regarding the degree to which these services are provided in comparison to
predetermined criteria.

EXPERIMENTAL METHOD
It is an method in which the investigator controls the educative factors to which a child or group of
children is subjected during the period of inquiry and observe the resulting achievement .

CASE STUDY METHOD


Single individual is studied through this approach. Goals are formulated counselling take place , data
are collected on progress towards goals. These steps are followed by review and assessment of
changes on individual that are attributable to procedure employed.

CRITERIA OF EVALUATION OF AN EFFECTIVE GUIDANCE PROGRAMME


There two main aspects for establishing criteria for evaluation a guidance programme.
INTERNAL ASPECTS
 Needs and demands of students
 Establishment of balance amount corrective, preventive and developmental
functions.
 Coordination among various guidance services
 Stability of Guidance programme
 Flexibility
 Cooperation among guidance Personnels

EXTERNAL ASPECT
 Counsellor-counselle ratio
 Qualification and experience held by counsellor
 Record maintenance
 Accessibility of information material
 Qualitative and quantitative aspects of testing and non testing techniques used.
 Interpretation of data

PROBLEMS IN EVALUATION OF GUIDANCE PROGRAMME


1. Lack of complete authority for conducting evaluation
2. Counsellors has no time for self evaluation.
3. Counsellors are not efficient to conduct self-evaluation
4. Lack of proper evaluation tools
5. Lack of speed money and adequate time.

CONCLUSION
Evaluation is the criteria component of developmental guidance programme, its
activities make decisions or to take actions regarding the future. Evaluation provide
information to ensure continuous improvement of the guidance programme and gives
direction to necessary changes.
