1. Development of the Periodic Table and Periodic Trends Tasks:

1. Explain the development of the modern periodic table.

2. Discuss updates/researches on the uses of radioactive elements.

Procedure: Part I.

Development of the Periodic Table After reading the learning resources on the development of the
Periodic Table, identify the top three scientists that you deemed to greatest contributions in the
evolution of the Periodic System.

1. Dimitri Mendeleev
I guess he has the greatest contribution so far. He jotted down the symbols for the chemical
elements, putting them in order according to their atomic weights and inventing the periodic
table. He noted that repeating patterns of behavior could be seen in the way elements
combined with each other. He included “holes” in his table for as yet undiscovered elements
and predicted their properties. He is recognized as the father of the modern periodic table. He is
considered to be the most important contributor to the development of the periodic table. His
version of the periodic table organized elements into rows according to their atomic mass and
into columns based on chemical and physical properties.

2. Julius Lothar Meyer

Since my report was all about periodic properties I am amazed how Meyer did contribute to the
development of the periodic table in another way though. He was the first person to recognize
the periodic trends in the properties of elements, he saw a pattern in the atomic volume of an
element plotted against its atomic weight. He developed a periodic classification of the chemical
elements. Medeleev and him both arranged the elements by their mass and proposed that
certain properties periodically reoccur.

3. Johann Wolfgang Döbereiner

Before Dobereiner there were many chemists who attempted to classify elements on the basis
of their properties, nature, character, valency, etc. But none of them became so famous to be
learned at present and many other consequences of elements was not explained and shown by
their contributions. Dobereiner arranged elements in increasing order of their atomic weight.
Dobereiner is the first one to contribute in the evolution of the periodic table. He arranged the
then known elements of the periodic table as a group of three elements and he called this group
as traids. He arranged the elements in such a way that the average of the masses of the first and
third element will be equal to the atomic mass of the middle one. This method was discarded
since did not hold true for all elements. He gave rise to earlier curiosities for more knowledge
about periodic table.

Explain by citing their major contributions. Then, look for one update on the development of the
Periodic Table. Screenshot and paste in document. Write three to five sentences comment on the
importance of the discovery or contribution of the scientist.
Comment:

In this paper by Numan, A. et.al.(2021), they presented a Cube based Interface in Virtual Periodic Table
(CIVPT) for demonstration of the detail information of chemical elements. The cube with its six faces
provides the information of chemical elements; chemical properties, physical properties, electronic
configuration, usage of an element in daily life and chemical bonding respectively. Outcomes of the
evaluations revealed that CIVPT enhances students’ learning and their motivations in gaining knowledge
about chemical elements.
