What I Need to Know

This module was written and designed to make learning easier especially as we are in
the New Normal situation. As an educational tool, this module about the Teenage
Issues and Concerns: Pre-Marital Sex and Teenage Pregnancy challenges you as a
learner, to become creative, resourceful and independent. The scope of the module
provides a variety of activities that will stimulate independent and self-guided learning
experience. Lessons in this module are arranged to follow the standard sequence of
the course to ensure effective learning continuity, make the experience more
meaningful, effective and relevant to life situations.

After going through this module, the learners are expected to:
1. discuss two teenage concerns specifically pre-marital sex and teenage
pregnancy;
2. know the facts and risk of engaging in pre-marital sex;
3. analyze the risks that may occur when you experience teenage pregnancy;
4. recognize double standard culture from equality; and
5. discuss the importance of staying virgin until marriage.

1 Concerns: Pre-Marital Sex
and Teenage Pregnancy
As a teenager, we experience heightened desire to explore our sexuality. It is normal
and accepted, but to go beyond exploration is not really advisable. As teenagers, you
are expected to responsibly respond to these desires. You should always weigh and
think of the consequences of doing things related to your sexuality.
In this lesson we will be discussing the effects of exploration of sexuality which are the
pre-marital sex and teenage pregnancy.

What is It

Definition of terms
Pre-marital Sex - This is engaging in sexual activity before getting married.
Pregnancy - is the term used to describe the period in which a fetus develops inside
a woman's womb or uterus.
Teenage Pregnancy - also known as adolescent pregnancy, is pregnancy in a female
under the age of 20.

These terms are just few of concerns that teenagers face nowadays. Sexual behaviors
of adolescents and youth are categorized as one of the main health priorities of a
society because of high occurrence of human immunodeficiency virus/acquired

immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS), sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and
unwanted pregnancies. The youth engage in these activities without knowing the
consequences that might arise in result to their actions.
Below are the facts and the possible risks of engaging in pre-marital sex.

Some risks of pre-marital sex is also given in the table above. Take note: these risks
are the consequences one might face when he or she engage in pre-marital sex. STDs
or Sexually transmitted diseases are one of the biggest risk or result of pre-marital and
unsafe sex. Another common consequence is teenage pregnancies. This is another
issue and concern of most teenagers nowadays. Other risks are infertility or being
unable to bear a child due to some complications, social and religious effects, early
marriage or bondage, and some emotional and psychological manipulation due to lack
of knowledge about the situation they put theirselves into.
Now that we are already done discussing the facts and risks of pre-marital sex, let us
now move on to another issue which is the teenage pregnancy. We already defined
teenage pregnancy as the pregnancy of women below 20 years of age. Let’s see what
are the possible causes and risks of teenage pregnancy.

In the tables above, we enumerated the causes and possible risks of teenage
pregnancy. Let us now discuss how they became causes and risks.
Alcohol and drugs are the leading cause of not only teenage pregnancy but most of
teenage issues and concerns. The lack of alternative entertainment and socialization
made drinking and substance abuse a normal part of teenage social life.
Socioeconomic factors specifically poverty can greatly contribute to teenage pregnancy.
Poverty can result to poor quality of education and it can make the children vulnerable
to emotional and psychological manipulations which may lead to poor decision
making. Wrong set of peers can influence us to do things that might affect our life as a
whole. That is why it is very important to choose the kind people we join and interact
with. Another cause of teenage pregnancy is sexual abuse or rape. This is a sexual

interaction against the will of the other person involved. Last cause is the media, it
may be indirect but some of the movies especially western movies shows rampant
sexual activities at a very young age. These movies or shows normalizes premarital
sexual interactions that might convince the youth that it is ok to engage in these kinds
of activities.
The risks or consequences of teenage pregnancy includes long term effects to both the
mother and the baby. As for the baby the effects might be pre-mature birth where the
baby is born 3 weeks or earlier than the due date of the pregnancy or low birth weight
baby, where the baby is suffering from malnutrition and didn’t achieved the normal
weight upon birth. As for the mother, she can suffer from high blood pressure after
birth due to a condition called postpartum preeclampsia. Early pregnancy may also
heighten the possibility of acquiring STDs. Last risk or effect would be the post partum
depression where the mom suffers from severe mood swings, excessive crying,
withdrawing from your family and friends, insomnia, irritability, restlessness, and
difficulty bonding with the baby. These are just some of the things a mother and a
baby may experience due to teenage pregnancy.
