Basic Concepts
1 - active voice - The subject is the doer of the action.
2 - passive voice - The subject is receiver of the action.
3 - passive - The doer may sometimes be found at the latter
part OR is not stated at all.
A child was bit by the dog.
Dogs in the neighborhood were notorious for being aggressive,
but the local officers would not have taken action until a child
was bit.
PREFERABLE: The food was delivered.
NON-PREFERABLE: The delivery man delivered the food.
PREFERABLE: This gold necklace was given to me by my
husband.
NON-PREFERABLE: This gold necklace was given to me.
(Important information was missing or needed.)
4 - active > passive | Authors prefer to use the active voice.
Reasons:
- To express dynamism since the doer of the action indicated
is prominently situated (subject position).
Dr. Stockmann revealed the presence of the contaminants in
the baths.
Passive: The presence of the contaminants in the baths was
revealed by Dr. Stockmann.
The public rebuked him for his decision.
Passive: He was rebuked by the public for his decision.
- To emphasize the doer, especially if the sentence intends to
emphasize culpability and responsibility for the action being
done.
The tanneries leak impurities in the water.
The mayor voted against the publication of the results of the

The mayor voted against the publication of the results of the
tests.
- To write a shorter sentence since sentences in the passive
voice tend to be wordier.
Active: They set the stage for the public meeting. (8 words)
Passive: The stage was set for the public meeting by them.
