Basic Concepts
1 - active voice - The subject is the doer of the action.
2 - passive voice - The subject is receiver of the action.
3 - passive - The doer may sometimes be found at the latter
part OR is not stated at all.
A child was bit by the dog.
Dogs in the neighborhood were notorious for being aggressive,
but the local officers would not have taken action until a child
was bit.
PREFERABLE: The food was delivered.
NON-PREFERABLE: The delivery man delivered the food.
PREFERABLE: This gold necklace was given to me by my
husband.
NON-PREFERABLE: This gold necklace was given to me.
(Important information was missing or needed.)
4 - active > passive | Authors prefer to use the active voice.
Reasons:
- To express dynamism since the doer of the action indicated
is prominently situated (subject position).
Dr. Stockmann revealed the presence of the contaminants in
the baths.
Passive: The presence of the contaminants in the baths was
revealed by Dr. Stockmann.
The public rebuked him for his decision.

done.

- To write a shorter sentence since sentences in the passive
voice tend to be wordier.
Active: They set the stage for the public meeting. (8 words)
Passive: The stage was set for the public meeting by them.
(10 words)

TIMES WHEN THE PASSIVE CONSTRUCTION IS NECESSARY:

1. To emphasize the receiver of the action because the
receiver is MORE IMPORTANT than the doer.
- The customers of the bath will be poisoned by the
impurities.
○ Active, less effective: The impurities will poison the
customers of the bath.
- Dr. Stockmann is declared the enemy of the people.
○ Active, less effective: The people declare Dr. Stockmann
as their enemy.

2. To remove the doer from the sentence in order to present a

more objective stance in writing, especially in scientific
writing where the actions, procedures, and results are more
important.
- The soil was tested for chemicals and was found
contaminated.
- The public baths were deemed unhealthy and harmful to
people's health.

3. To provide sentence variety.

Active: The people shouted at them.
Passive: They were shouted at.
