Objectives:
1. Define textual evidences.
2. Validate claims using textual evidence.
3. Appreciate the value of evidences in supporting the claims.

Textual evidence refers to proof/evidence cited within the text. They must be near the claim and must be
logically related to the claim. They must also be from the credible sources and must be based on facts.

Evidence can include the following:


 facts and statistics (objectively validated information on your subject);
 opinion from experts (leading authorities on a topic, such as researchers or academics); and
 personal anecdotes (generalizable, relevant, and objectively considered).

The following are the characteristics of good evidence:


 unified;
 relevant to the central point;
 specific and concrete;
 accurate; and
 representative or typical.

Steps to Cite Textual Evidence


1. Read and analyze the text
2. Think about the questions
3. Search for the specific parts of the text to answer the questions
4. Use the author’s exact words
5. Use quotation marks
6. Tell where you found it
