Marketing Aspect
I.1. Description of the Product/Project

Flower Café will primarily sell a wide variety of cut, fresh, or potted flowers, together

with our services like flower care, handling, designs, arrangements, merchandising, display,

and delivery. We ensure high quality served flowers that are also aromatic and aesthetic that

anyone couldn’t take their eyes off it. We also offer a free coffee for walk-in customers while

they're waiting for the product, and to relax and enjoy the view of our shop. Service involves

accomplishing customers’ satisfaction towards our products that nobody couldn’t almost

resist being appealed to. We offer different kinds of flowers such as roses, sunflowers, tulips,

chrysanthemums, orchids, anthuriums, and more. We will arrange the flowers depending on

the customer's tastes and preferences. We interact with the customers in a friendly and

generous manner, most likely forming a friendship towards them.

Flower Café is a partnership business. The size of the whole business is just small simple

store but aesthetically appealing because of the pastel design of the shop. It’s like walking in

a whimsical garden like in most fairytales. It may look small but when you go inside, it feels

like you’ve just walked to a garden all in fresh bloom.

Our mission statement is how we make our customers fall in love with our products and

service and make them never regret falling in love with our business. Serving them full

satisfaction and attraction. Our core values involve providing high quality service with

honesty, excellence, and friendliness inserted. Our business is located at Brgy. Marcelino

Memije G.M.A. Cavite alongside of barangay court.

The reason why we’ve decided to open up a flower shop is because we’re incredibly in love

with nature, especially with flowers. We want to share our devotion for nature by bringing

and sharing with the beauty and knowledge about our products and providing them high

quality service that melts and warms their hearts.

1.2 Market Characteristics

Blossoms Flower Arrangers is a flower shop wherein we provide exotic flowers that is

not a burden to the pocket. We would want to spread our love for nature through providing

high quality products and services with love and affection straight from our hearts.

A. Industry Background

The Philippine flower industry has gone a long way since cut flowers were its major

produce in the 1970’s and growers were local hobbyists and plant enthusiasts. During the

1980’s the flower industry became more commercialized as it generated huge profits and

had lots of potential to earn foreign revenues. The land area of flower farms grew and

growers adapted modern techniques and machinery to produce flowers both Filipinos and

other people around the world can enjoy. Over the last two decades, growers and

enthusiasts realized that the high return on investment, higher standards of living, rapid

population growth, and an influx of tourists led to more fickle clients who only want high-

standard cut flowers.

The Philippine flower industry has grown over the past three decades because of high local

and foreign demand, combined with the expansion of the tourism sector. According to Jerry

Sibal, a New York-based floral designer, the Philippine flower production has the potential to

become a multi-billion-peso industry amid the high demand from local and international

markets, and the Philippine horticulture and floriculture sector could spur economic activities,

support small businesses, generate more jobs and increase export revenues. This would be

possible if the government and private sector would work together toward this common goal.

Data show that fresh cut flower exports posted export sales of more than $370,000 annually

from 1991 to 2000. Production, however, normally falls short of the rising domestic demand
Republic of the Philippines
CAVITE STATE UNIVERSITY
Don Severino delas Alas Campus, Indang Cavite

particularly during Valentine’s Day, Christmas, All Saint’s Day and school graduation, forcing

the country to import flowers like orchids and chrysanthemums.

This is because local farmers and horticulturists need to build more greenhouses which

require big investments.

Flower production also requires technologies and agricultural chemicals that are usually

imported from other countries.

B. Demand Consideration

Flower shops and retail outlets in Metro Manila rank chrysanthemums, roses,

orchids, and anthuriums as the most preferred cut flowers. In Cebu City, florists have strong

preference for roses, chrysanthemums, anthuriums, and gerberas. The other key demand

center is Davao City in Mindanao although the total demand is much lower than those in

Manila and Cebu. The Davao City demand is greatly for orchids and roses since Davao is a

major producer of dendrobiums, vandas, and roses.

An increased demand triggered more production but despite the larger area devoted to cut

flower, there is still a short fall in the supply. The demand for the domestic market is so big

that the country has no option but to import some cut flowers, mainly chrysanthemum and

orchids from other countries. This is strongly evident during Valentine's Day (Feb. 14), All

Saint's Day (Nov. 1), School Graduation (March and April), May Flower Festivals and

Yuletide Seasons (December).

C. Supply Consideration
Republic of the Philippines
CAVITE STATE UNIVERSITY
Don Severino delas Alas Campus, Indang Cavite

Since Flower Café is merchandise, we have a supply from local which is from Baguio

City. Based on an article, about half of the total 410 hectares of land in Bahong in La

Trinidad (famous flower growing community) are intended for agricultural use particularly for

cut flower production with roses not the only flower produced because farmers have

ventured into the production of chrysanthemums and anthuriums. Bahong is considered as

the center of the local cut-flower industry in this part of Benguet with cut-flower-producing

barangays of this town, such as Ambiong and Alno.

The flower production of the province reached 24, 862, 467 MT for the year of 2011. La

Trinidad has the highest contribution with 18, 876, 650 MT of cut flower production.

Cut flower farmers here sell their products at the Dimasalang area in Manila. Benguet

supplies heavily to these open markets, aside from highland vegetables.

In selecting the target market, the proponents considered the type of products that will be

offered in the market. We have positioned our flower shop to service the residence of Brgy.

Marcelino Memije as well as to our potential clients and residence located in G.M.A. Cavite.

Flower as its main product, Flower Café focused on marketing the product to the potential

customers of Brgy. Marcelino Memije as well as the residents of G.M.A. surrounding in that

area. Flower Café is definitely for all ages and gender.

II.2. Product/Project Process

Preparing the flowers

Step 1: Once you have chosen your flowers, put them in lukewarm water.

Step 2: Carefully remove all the wrapping and cut off the rubber bands.

Step 3: Using a sharp pair of flower shears or floral clippers, make a fresh cut and trim about

an inch off the bottom of the stems. Leaving them in lukewarm water will help the flowers

absorb the water better.

Step 4: Leave them in the water for a couple of days before you start arranging them.

Arranging the flowers

Before you arrange the flowers, make sure you are seated with the arrangement at eye

level. This way, you are at a good angle for creating an even arrangement.
Republic of the Philippines
CAVITE STATE UNIVERSITY
Don Severino delas Alas Campus, Indang Cavite

Step 1: Wear a rubber or garden gloves when dealing with flowers with thorns or sharp

edges.

Step 2: Remove thorns with a sharp knife at an angle or clippers at the base of the thorn.

Step 3: Make another fresh 45-degree angle cut before you put the flowers in your

arrangement and trim any leaves that will be submerged in water. Leaves that stay in water

have a tendency to rot, contaminating the water and allowing the flowers to die quicker.

Step 4: Start your arrangement with floral foam or a flower frog to keep the stems in place

and stabilized. Flower frogs come in handy when your container is shallow or low. They can

also help keep the stems away from the edges of the container so they don’t scratch your

vase or pottery. You can also use floral tape in a crisscross grid pattern. If you use foam,

make sure you water the arrangement every couple of days.

Step 5: Depending on where you place your flowers, consider whether you need to build

your bouquet vertically or horizontally. For horizontal arrangements, use a shallow vase or

container. You should also think about the shape of your arrangement (oval, triangle, etc.).

For vertical arrangements, make sure the flowers are at least 1.5 times the height of the

vase or container. Large-scale arrangements can have an interesting effect, but make sure

they are proportional to your container.

Step 6: Start by placing the large flowers towards the center and the small flowers in the

outer areas. For a symmetrical arrangement, cut the stems gradually shorter as you work

away from the center. You can fill in your arrangement with foliage, extra stems, or leaves,

depending on the season. As you build, take a step back every once in a while to make sure

no empty spots or holes need to be filled. For narrow, tall arrangements, use a rubber band

to hold the stems together and keep the bouquet in place.

Republic of the Philippines
CAVITE STATE UNIVERSITY

Step 7: Make sure the flower pot are thoroughly cleaned out to keep bacteria and other

microorganisms from infecting your flowers.

II.3. Proposed Business Location

A. Merits and Features of the Location

Flower Café together with its production area will be situated in Brgy. Marcelino

Memije G.M.A. Cavite. We chose to establish our shop in a garage for its to become

a rent-free shop and for us to lessen our expenses in establishing our business.

Flower Café is in a good spot where people can pass through because it is located

alongside the barangay court. There’s a shop who offer the same product but Flower

Café is more convenient to those customers who are near in our shop and the only

flower shop within walking distance. For this reason, it is the best place to situate the

business so customers can also purchase the product easily.

Financial Aspect
A. Introduction to Financial Aspect of the Business

Financial assumptions are essential to a business for it gives the value expected of

the company. This includes their financial projections and estimations with regards to the

business’ sales and expenses.

This section would be highlighted especially for the potential investors who are

deeply concerned of the business’ going concern capability. Financial Assumptions would

give them the assurance they need in investing or donating additional capital that the

business would need. This would also be beneficial to the owner/s, because this would give

them estimations and projections regarding the expected sales and expenses of the

business. Financial Assumption can illustratively show an estimation of the business’ life

(e.g. years the business would breakeven sales, months/ years it would take for the

business to gain, when are the times which the business will fall) that would give the owner/s

idea on how to bounce back from their business’ shortcomings. Results of financial

projections would also help the owner formulate proper and efficient business strategies

ahead of time to prevent backlashes. Lastly, financial assumptions may also be important in

hiring highly competent employees. This would give them security of the high salaries they

should expect and the incentives that would be given through a good financial projection.

C. Source of Financing

The source of finance would be coming from the owners’ own equity and from the

funds that would be collected from investors and loans (if possible). Loans are not on the list

of primary source of funds for Flower Café, however, the company is not closing its doors to

donations and its own company investments which would gain interests and dividends that

would further increase the company’s assets and equity.

Social Economic Aspect

Our purpose business is not just concerned in earning income but also focused in
creating economic growth and opportunities. Small business value and the role they play in
our economy is sometimes underestimated because, they are in fact small. But the truth is
there’s nothing small about the impact they have on our economy. Before that, we must start
from beginning, which is the Flower Café production, and its aspect. This project may result
of high standard in living, employment and economic country development.

A. Benefits to the Beneficiaries

Flower shops are useful for many other reasons too; they allow people and
gardeners to create wonderful flower beds or pots without having to grow their own. You can
visit a flower shop and walk away with a flower that would’ve taken weeks or months to
bloom and grow but you’ve got yours within minutes. Gardening is a great hobby and a
serene escape for a lot of people. Probably the main reason flower shops are used is when
looking for a gift or to pay respects for certain occasions. Flower shops are the home to
many different varieties of flowers; people go into and look for roses when buying a present
for their valentine or just some nice-looking flowers for a birthday or some lilies to pay
respects at a funeral.
Fresher Selection: Florists’ inventory is fresher than what you’ll find online, which means
that the flower arrangements will last longer. This is a huge consideration when sending
flowers, as you will want the recipient to have the arrangement to look at and enjoy for as
long as possible.
Customer Service: Purchasing from a local flower shop allows you to interact with staff that
can provide excellent customer service. A florist will be happy to assist with floral
combinations that will make the perfect display or discuss the gift recipient’s favorite colors
and varieties of flowers for a truly unique arrangement.
Ability to View Selection in Person: A visit to your local florist allows you to see what they
have in stock and examples of their presentation first-hand. You can also learn more about
the process of how they put together their flower arrangements when you visit your expert
florist in person.
Money Savings: A local florist can help you select flowers that are in season and at the best
prices—this is especially beneficial if you’ve got a strict budget. You won’t have to deal with
any of the hidden fees that an online florist would tack on to your order. Not to mention, you’ll
be supporting the local economy!

B. Benefits to the Community and Government

Flower shop businesses are at the heart of the community because people turn to
them at important milestones in their life. You’ll get to be a part of a huge number of special
occasions, from creating table displays at a baby’s christening to the bouquet a bride walks
down the aisle with.
Republic of the Philippines
CAVITE STATE UNIVERSITY
Don Severino delas Alas Campus, Indang Cavite

Often, florists also come to be involved in creating bouquets for partners who hope to make
amends after a bump in the road. And many flower shop owners become privy to sensitive
information – which, of course, they never reveal! This puts you right at the heart of your
community, and it’s likely you’ll make good friends among your customer base. In return for
their trust, you’ll need to be able to give useful recommendations and create personalized
arrangements for those who need them.
The Philippine Ornamental Horticulture Industry has come a long way since the 70's when
cut flowers were considered its major component and the growers were hobbyists or plant
enthusiasts. In the mid 80's the industry became a huge income source and potential for a
foreign revenue earner. Interest in the commercialization of horticultural products grew to a
point where the government recognized its importance and contribution to the local
economy. The number and size of farms had continued to increase adopting modern
technologies where appropriate and in some cases foreign technology was sourced to boost
production and quality. Promotion on the use of Ornamental Horticulture products increased
people's awareness of the benefits that can be derived from the industry.
The floriculture industry in the Philippines is almost synonymous with the ornamental
horticulture industry; the former connotes flowers; the latter, includes flowers and other
ornamentals. The country offers the following horticultural products for both domestic and
external trade:
Cut flowers - fresh flowers and flower buds that have been cut from the plant suitable for
bouquets, wreaths, corsage and special flower arrangements.
Foliage and other plant parts - fresh leaves and branches of trees, shrubs, bushes and other
plants, grasses, mosses, lichens and the like suitable for ornamental purposes.
Dried ornamentals - dried, dyed, bleached plant materials such as grasses, statice,
eucalyptus.
Other ornamentals - trees, shrubs, bushes, roots, cuttings and slips used indoor or for
landscape purposes.
The phenomenal growth of the Ornamental Horticulture Industry in the last few years has led
the Department of Agriculture to include the cut flower in its Key Commercial Crop
Development Program (KCCDP) for 1996 - 2000. The Department of Trade and Industry
adopted the ornamental crops as its "Export Winner" and the Department of Science &
Technology recognized it in its Science & Technology for National Development (STAND
2000). Young as it is, the industry has shown its vital role in the local economy, and slowly it
is penetrating the export market and emerging as a true global competitor.

C. Benefits to the Establishment

Flowers – it’s always beautiful, even in the store, at least at the exhibition, even
though in the greenhouse, though in the wild. But if the natural beauty of a plant is skillfully
emphasized in a bouquet, then the demand for such a flower will increase. Therefore, do not
be afraid of the opinion of businessmen who did not dare to trade flowers in their time, if you
approach the matter competently, in a few months you can create a profitable and profitable
business.
Republic of the Philippines
CAVITE STATE UNIVERSITY

D. Negative Implication
The good news is that not all cut flowers are adding to our environmental impact in the same
way, and some of them not very much at all. We will get to the part of the cut flower industry
that has a reasonably low impact later.
The flowers that do have a more significant footprint are the ones we almost take for granted
the ones produced for the two big flower holidays every year. You guessed it: Mother’s Day
and Valentine’s Day.
One aspect of Valentine’s Day flowers, making them expensive for the planet, is that they
are generally roses, and roses are delicate flowers
They aren’t going to grow in cold climates in the middle of February. They also wilt quickly,
and they can’t be shipped slowly. Then, there’s the problem of having all of those roses
ready by February 14th (they won’t earn anyone any money after that date), and shipped
quickly to the North American and European markets.
It is estimated that these markets take 100 million roses and that to send them on time adds
about 9,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere.
The news about big holiday flowers isn’t great. Vast quantities of Valentine’s Day and
Mother’s Day flowers add to greenhouse gases. Some form of pollutant results from the
industry every step of the way:

Chemicals used to grow the flowers.

25% more diesel fuel used to refrigerate them on every leg of their journey.

E. Socio-Economic Analysis
The floriculture industry is one of the newly emerging industries. Since its modest beginning
in the early 1990s, it has created employment opportunities for a large section of the
population. Realizing its capacity to generate employment, foreign exchange and the
country’s geography advantage, the government is also encouraging investors to invest in
the sector. Despite these advantages, negative aspects are existed behind the industry
which hindered from the production of sustainable flower. The major and most worrying
negative factor of the flower is focused on environmental issue because floriculture requires
intensive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides and needs huge amounts of water than
conventional farming in addition to thoroughly monitored waste management system. If it is
not well managed, whatever the farms put on the ground, sooner or later, will end up in the
water or soil. In addition, the country has a history of a deadly cycle of drought and famine
for the decades due to environmental degradation. In order to evaluate the impact of
floriculture industry in the country I have developed a set of criteria from a social and
environmental perspective. From the environmental perspective I have been identified five
major criteria. These are: water pollution, soil pollution, air pollution water resource utilization
and land use change. Among the social perspective I have identified seven major issues,

which are absence of workers’ health and occupational safety, workers rights abuse,
problem women encounter and sexual harassment, surrounding community health problems
and improper compensation for previous land holders. Except job creation all the rests are
negatively existed in the floriculture industry. Considering workers health and occupational
safety it is evident that the inadequacy or complete lack of facilities, presence of high
temperature in the greenhouse, repeated exposure to chemicals and pesticides are likely to
make workers’ vulnerable to health risks. It would seem that the management is not willing to
regularly checks workers’ health conditions, nor is it committed to improve workers' health
and safety issues through training. Some of the workers have already experienced ill-health
effects as a result of their poor working conditions. Even though the floriculture industry has
created employment opportunity for many people the problems related to employment
conditions, fundamental rights at work, safety and health condition of workers and social
protection are huge. The increase in production and profit should not be at the cost of
workers. Therefore, worker’s human right and working conditions need to be given due
attention. Problems related to pesticide and chemical use and application were also
identified. Workers do not follow safety instructions all the time and also they are not
regularly informed about health risks and the necessary precautionary measures they need
to take as a result of coming into contact with chemicals and pesticides. Workers do not
usually use protective wears, in addition to their uniforms being too old worn out. These
situations increase workers’ exposure to the negative-health effects of pesticides and
chemicals. It is absolutely important that workers be informed about the possible negative
effects of chemical risks so that they can take precautionary measures, and that workers
need to be oriented to the importance of following instructions in the applications of
pesticide.
