ASSIGNMENT 2

1. What are the four alternative terms used for tropical cyclone?
 HURRICANE – are tropical storms that form over the North Atlantic Ocean
and Northeast Pacific.
 CYCLONE – are formed over the South Pacific and Indian Ocean.
 TYPHOON – are formed over the Northwest Pacific Ocean.
 WILLY WILLIES – are formed near the coasts of East Australia and North

2. Explain the factors that contributes to the development of tropical cyclones.

The main energy source of a tropical cyclone is water vapor which is abundant

in the oceans and seas. When the sun heats up the earth surface, water vapor
evaporates into the atmosphere and condenses into water droplets, a great
amount of heat energy, which is locked up in the water vapor, is released.
 Warm oceans with surface temperatures in excess of 27 degrees, and a deep
layer of water to 60m
 A location between 5degrees north and south of the equator. (Without this the
corriolis force is not sufficient to create the spinning motion characteristics of
hurricanes.)
 Relatively stable and uniform atmospheric conditions of temperature, humidity
and pressure. In the upper troposphere air drawn in at lower altitudes must be
able to escape.
 Relative humidity of over 60% to provide sufficient energy to power the hurricane.
 Little change of horizontal wind with height.
 Existing cyclonic spinning of winds in the lower troposphere.

3. How does tropical cyclone affect navigation?

Tropical cyclones on the open sea cause large waves, heavy rain, and high winds,
disrupting international shipping and, at times, causing shipwrecks. Generally, after its
passage, a tropical cyclone stirs up ocean water, lowering sea surface
temperatures behind it. This cool wake can cause the region to be less favorable for a
subsequent tropical cyclone and have an enormous impact on ships and shipping
logistics. Entire supply chains can be disrupted when ships are delayed due to the
presence of a cyclone, affecting thousands of people.
SELF ASSESSMENT
1. Which part of the subject didn’t sink to your understanding? Why?
For me is about the conversion formula of temperature unit and pressure units because
I did not purely memorize to keep those in my mind.
2. What topic did you easily understand, why?
For me is about the weather map overview , everything is easily understood if you take
study well.
3. What your observations or recommendation to improve your learning about the
topic?
For myself I need to put extra effort and time to self-study as a find it difficult for me to
remember the topics given if it is only discussed in our asynchronous class.
