REPORT ON PROFESSIONAL PRACTISE 2

1) Your understanding of Architectural professional practice

The academic aspect of the architectural profession gives the liberty to explore conceptually and

“out-of-the-box” and rightfully so. It lays the foundation of climatic studies, humanities and rules

and regulations.

Architectural profession on the other hand is a place which tests managemental skills and how

we are different from others who studied the same course

Architecture course in India is overlooked by CoA, which monitors the quality and standards of

the architectural education in India. It is also its responsibility to safeguard the profession in

practice.

Architecture, unlike many other professional course values creativity and unique ideas also along

with experience and technical knowledge. This can be taken as leverage to climb the ladder, but

has to be identified from the college itself. So, we can say that the success in architecture field is

cultivated through syllabus, and by students during their course, and also the early days of

practice.

Architecture is also a hub which open doors to many related professions like graphic design,

photography, fashion design and even cake-architecture. Possibilities are endless, but hard to

tread on.

2. The changes you want to bring into architectural studies curriculum wise, institutional

wise, syllabus wise etc.

The academic curriculum of the studies has been traditionally passed on from generations and

hasn't seen much upgrade.

I think it is important to lay basics to concepts like BIM and parametric architecture in college

itself. This absence of knowledge can result in being ignored in such firms, as the basics will take

time to grasp and time is not taken for granted during practicing.

There is no management aspect taught in college, about how to work or run a firm. This will play

a main role in the success of the student’s career.

Successful career in architecture is easier once we narrow down the character of projects, we

apply ourselves to. Being A large collection of paths, it is important to make the students aware

of the different fields and where they will fit in perfectly.

Transparency in program is often missing in the work done, students are often clueless why a

task is being performed. The syllabus, assignments and tasks should be carefully picked and

sorted to be clear about the outcome of the program. A teacher should think before giving an

assignment “What is the outcome? how is it helping the students? What difference does the

existence and non-existence of this classwork make in their growth?”

3. Meaning of architecture for you and your future as an architect.

Architecture for me is something everyone does or understands in one way or another. Even

though not knowing the underlying principle behind it, people know which room in their house is

warmer, where does wind come in, where does light fall in the morning etc.

An architect is just someone who has technical knowledge of why this is happening and how to

use it to make human comfort.

So, architecture being such a basic need and service in the world, it is sad to see that help of an

architect is called for only by a privileged class of the society. Maybe the misconception of

architecture being about materials and aesthetics is the reason, or maybe all the more, architects

are expensive for such underprivileged people.

I don't see myself as an architect yet, I’m open to choose a related path of design, planning or

even digital architecture. I also find interest in conservation and also academic research. If I turn

out to be an architect, I will divide my career/firm into two, one for making cost-efficient,

affordable architecture popular and the other to focus on premium architecture services, to keep

the former running without financial liabilities.

4. Future of architecture field, state reasons for your observation .

 Networking - Architects around the world will start collaborating to make architecture around

the world. This trend can be seen with the coming of BIM and other mediums which lets

different teams to pitch in ideas and correct and re edit data in a project. This helps in

remotely managing a project from another country.

 3D printing and VR- 3D printing is already used in architectural models in India and around

the world. This is further stepping ahead to concrete 3d printing of 1:1 scale, i.e., the

buildings themselves. This will cut costs and human labor put into a building and also the

time involved.

 Virtual reality will replace 3d models as they form more spatial relation for clients about their

future projects. Architects should be able to update themselves and fit into this evolving

market.

 Sustainability will be a key aspect in buildings as the harm caused by the construction

industry is being revealed, more sustainable architecture will be promoted, or even mandated

to control the destruction of resources. Carbon footprint and embodied energy will be a

consideration in even residential projects.

5. what you think is the current challenges architects, architecture students face and

solutions for them, min of 3 challenges and its solution .

 The profession is being practiced by unqualified people who can afford to do the service at

lower cost. There are instances when architects are undercut by such civil engineers or people

with no design educational background. This can be solved by a firm decision of CoA to

prohibit non-architects practicing in the field. Amendments can also be done in fee structure

to make the profession more affordable and approachable by general public

 Fresh graduates are facing many issues at the workplace with overworking and unpaid or low

wage internships. This dishearten the youth in working in the field and in turn affects the

quality of output. It is the basic right of an individual to get what he works for. There should

be clear laws stating the percentage of income an intern should be getting, and it should be

made transparent along with the call letter

 The general public or the vast majority of the lower middle class is still unaware of the

advantages of hiring an architect. There is a misconception of being expensive and over-

budget, while architects can also help in cutting down the budget of the project. The pattern

can be seen in how graduates come out with the middle class and upper middle class as their

target audience and ignoring the introduction of the field to the larger audience. This can be

solved by making the field more transparent and accessible for the public through education

that does not end in IIA meetings. Social media platforms and word-of-mouth publicity can

be used to break these misconceptions and make people aware of the advantages of hiring a

professional.
