My First Day at Centerville
I woke up at 7am this morning, very awake. May be it was early
bird excitement. Every other day, I usually wake up with the help of my mom, but still, I would be very sleepy. But this morning differed from any other morning I ever lived through. I have been waiting for this very day all summer. In an hour I would be sitting at my desk in my classroom in junior high. By 7:15, I was sitting at the kitten table, wolfing down my honey bunch of oats as fast as I could. At this rate, it only took me 3 minutes to finish off with my breakfast. The next thing I new I was flying to the bathroom to shower and brush my teeth. After 5 minutes of showering and 2 minutes dedicated to brushing my teeth, I dressed up extra fast, like a soldier getting ready to stop and attack. At 7:30, I was pedaling hard, as fast as could in order to get to school on time. My first time in Junior High was I biking forward at the speed of light. And things like that excite me to death. But, unlike I had predicted, a problem, like a tsunami, loomed over me. How was I ever going to find my classroom in this extra-sized, maze- like building? I could see stairs, halls and doors, door, doors everywhere! At the moment, I was left in the dark, filing like I had to find a needle in a haystack. Making matters worse, the warning bell buzzed 8:05! I had only 5 minutes left to find my classroom. If I did not I would surely get detention for an hour after school! Just then a women with a long ponytail walked up to me. “What are you doing here all alone in the central hall?” She seemed to be addressing me. “Why it’s almost eighth ten and you still wondering around!” “Umm, I am, I’m,” I stammered in fear. “I’m lost and I have no idea where my classroom is.” “All right, then.” The women replied. “I’ve inferred that you’re now a seven grader, is that right? Because if you are, take that hall over there and go straight until you reach a sign that says ‘7th grade classes’. To the right will be a list of all the seven graders and there classrooms. Using that and a map on the left, find and go into your classroom and unpack. Understand?” The next step was simple. I went down the hall and soon enough I saw a sign that said “7 Grade Classes”. Looking to the right I noticed the list and the map. “Not me, not me… ”, I mumbled, looking for my name. “Aha! Katia Kireyeva is in room 8!” After finding my room on the map, I hurried to class, relived not to be late. At 8:10 I rushed into the class and started unpacking at the desk that said my name on it, knowing the teacher had to come soon. “Hi” said a girl right next to me “My name is Sophie, do you wonna be friends?” “Sure” I said quite surprised at the offer. “What’s you name?” asked Sophie “Katia” was my answer. Suddenly the teacher came in, I think. “May be we should continue this conversation at recess” “Good Morning students. My name is Mrs. Johnson,” the teacher said as she passed out papers. “I have compiled the schedule you will be using for this semester.“ “What’s your elective?” asked Sophie. “Woods!” I said proudly “Me too” “Students it is almost 8:30. You will have your next class in 5 minutes.” She told us. From looking at my schedule, I inferred that my next class, P.E., was in the gym. When I got to the gym, I saw a healthy looking woman wearing a marathon headband, come up to us. “Welcome to Physical Education. Please, call me Miss Pots. Outside you will find a track. Every week you will have to run a mile. This test helps us know who needs physical support.” She explained “But for now you will do other exercises like push-ups, jumping jacks and curl ups”. So the next hour was dedicated to hard and out-of-breath activities. I mean who could do 40 jumping jacks in 1 minute or 70 jump ropes in a row? After P.E. came another torture. Math. In the Math Class, there were two teacher-looking people talking to each other. When the Math Group came in, the two introduced themselves. “I am Mrs. Dornish,” said the woman in black. “I will be the regular math teacher” “And I am Mr. Talkesting. If you qualified for honors math I would be your new teacher.” Said the man on the right. “My students are Anika Calder, Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, Julia Child, Katia Kireyeva and some students from other classes”. Great. I was stock in the honors math doing extra-hard stuff extra-fast. Honors also meant lots of homework. “Honor students, please come with me,” said Mr. Talkesting. Me and some other students stood up and walked over to him. When we got to the class, Mr. Talkesting told us to sit down at the empty desks, and open our books to page 12. “It’s best that we get to know our math book before we dive in, so the for the next 15 minutes we will be doing a scavenger hunt within the book.” The next thing I knew I was answering questions like “where would you find the definition of absolute value?” or “what is the π equal to?” After the scavenger hunt our teacher started the actual teaching. “Please, open your book to page 20 chapter 1. Our first lesson will be about square root.” After writing the equation on the board Mr. Talkesting explained how it works: “b2 =b*b; √b2 =b, …” You get the point, what ever he was saying, it was certainly beyond my line of understanding. According to my schedule, science was next in line. After introducing herself, miss Child, my science teacher handed out our books. “The first chapter in our science book will be about the food chain. To begin, let’s review the food chain,” She took out a cup with Popsicle sticks. “When I pull out your stick, please name a category. Alison.” She said. “Umm, carnivores?” A girl with blond hair guessed. “Correct.” She wrote carnivores on the board. “Katia” “Decomposers!” I exclaimed. “Awesome. Patricia.” She said and so it went on. After about an hour of digesting and re-digesting the food chain, we started on the “experiment of the day”. Frog dissection. We had to find the liver, stomach, heard and eye of the pour creature. I might as well become a vegetarian. BRRRRRRINGGGG. That lunch bell sure sounds glories, when you’ve got an empty stomach. Everyone rushed outside to the cafeteria. Inside, I saw a salad bar, people being served lunch and ohh! There was just so much food! Just as I had walked up to the line with my food and money, I heard someone speak. “Give me your lunch money!” Said a huge boy behind me. “Or else!” “Or else what, jell-o mass?” I was shaking inside. “And, if you are flattered of my bravery, don’t be, cause I’ve got something else in show for you. CHIRTRTRT, CHRITRTRTR.” I don’t and never will know how those sounds came out of my mouth, but they were enough to make the bully run like he was on fire! “Woods,” I read off my schedule. “Hmm. I wonder where the next class could be?” Just then I saw Sophie. “Sophie, do you know where the Woods Class is going to be?” I asked her. “Yes, it’s in the art section. Let’s go!” She said pulling me to the next class. “In the woods class, students, you will be using lots of dangerous tools, ” said Mr. Hughson. “So you will need to pass a safety test.” It only took him 10 minutes to lecture us about the tools and how to use them safely. Next, we took a test, on what he just told us. As he graded our tests, he assigned the students to explore what previous students have built. I saw a skateboard, and even a football game board. One person even built a full size rocking chair. I couldn’t wait to start building my own project. When I hurried in the English classroom, the teacher yelled at me “Why are you so late? Mrs. Dods doesn’t like students who are late.” She sounded evil. “Uh, I could not find the classroom,” I squealed. “Well, hurry up and get to your desk.” She hollered at me. “Class, please get out your literature book, so we can begin.” She opened her copy of Tom Sawyer and began to read. I felt I could fall asleep right there, right then. After 30 minutes of reading she handed out spelling words for us to study at home and dismissed us. I walked out of the building tired and weary. A lot had happened that day.
