relating to people and the environment. They have retained social, cultural, economic and
political characteristics that are distinct from those of the dominant societies in which they live.
Despite their cultural differences, indigenous peoples from around the world share common
problems related to the protection of their rights as distinct peoples.
Indigenous peoples have sought recognition of their identities, way of life and their right
to traditional lands, territories and natural resources for years, yet throughout history, their rights
have always been violated. The land that Indigenous Peoples live on is home to over 80% of our
planet’s biodiversity and rich in natural resources, such as oil, gas, timber and minerals.
However, these lands are routinely appropriated, sold, leased or simply plundered and polluted
by governments and private companies. In the case study number three which is about the
deforestation in the Philippines, the Batak tribes are affected. The conservation schemes of the
government such as the ban on shifting cultivation and declaration of the protected areas within
their ancestral lands has been causing food shortage, malnutrition and poverty among the said
tribe. We can see in this situation that the rights of the IPs are being violated by the government
or in this situation there is government indifference where in it is the duty of the government to
protect the indigenous people. But we can see they are not instead they are those ones who are
discriminating and cutting the rights of the IPs. Another one which shows the violation of rights
of the indigenous peoples is the mining operations that is happening in Palawan area where in the
Bataks are complaining that even they didn’t give their consent the Philippine government still
urged mining companies to extract mineral resources in Palawan. The governments reason which
the mining companies would create more jobs and opportunities to the affected area of Palawan
doesn’t apply to the Batak tribe since they are poorly educated and their skills doesn’t match the
mining companies required skills. Instead of helping the Batak the government just worsen and
destroyed the ancestral land of the Batak. Indigenous peoples today, are arguably among the
most disadvantaged and vulnerable groups of people in the world. Indigenous Peoples face even
greater marginalization, poverty, disease and violence but with the equal rights provided by the
government and if the voice of the Indigenous peoples are heard it is not possible that poverty
would be eradicated.
Poverty has been more widespread and harder to overcome for the Indigenous people
because of the governments indifference. The ancestral lands of Indigenous peoples that they
have been protecting have been destroyed which affected their ways of life.
