Handling and operating manual

Packing

• Outer coated pieces will be by default delivered

on wooden crates with inside ad-hoc
separators to avoid contact and bumps
between coated surfaces. Special designs
and/or crate raw materials can be considered
on request.

• For particular applications or special

requirements, ad-hoc packing solutions with
additional surface protectors and shields
(liners/meshes) will be designed and
implemented to minimize risk of damage on
coated surfaces during transport and handling.

TUBACEX GROUP 3

Packing

• In principle inner coated tubes and fittings do

not require specific protection shields, since
coated surfaces are not easily accessible for
potential operations that might damage the
ceramic layer.

• Plastic caps can be placed on tube and fitting

ends to protect coated area from wrong
handling or operations that might affect the
integrity of the inner coated surfaces.

TUBACEX GROUP 4
Handling and operating manual

Packing

• Unless otherwise specified, inner coated parts

can be delivered in wrapped bundles according
to Tubacex standards. Wrapped bundles will
integrate textile slings to facilitate handling of
packages.

• Wrapped bundles and crates will include labels,

identification codes and gross weight in a
visible location to help operators handle the
packages with the proper lifting equipment.

Packing

• Wooden crates will be strapped with steel strip

to secure the whole package and guarantee
proper sealing and fit, avoiding relative
movements between integral parts.

• Wooden crates will include marks of preferred

lifting positions to be handled safely and
ensure the integrity of the package.

Packing

Small quantities or prototypes can be delivered with protective

plastic sleeves, bubble wrap and Tubacex burlap in ad-hoc
bundles instead of wooden crate, always ensuring the
integrity of the coated surfaces during the transport and
further handling.

Handling and operating manual

Transportation

• In general, care should be taken to prevent

damage during transport. It is strongly
recommended to handle the tubes in their
original sales packaging.

• Place packages in stable and secure position

following Tubacoat recommendations for every
particular design (lifting points, max stacking
capacity...).

• Strap and secure the goods according to

specific package design and applicable general
rules of stowage and cargo transport for trucks
and containers.

Handling and operating manual

Handling

• Use proper lifting systems and textile slings

with adequate load capacity and in good
condition to handle the packages.

• Use recommended lifting points of packages to

ensure integrity of the load.

• When using mechanical tools and machines

(forklifts, cranes etc.) extra caution should be
taken to prevent damage to packages and
products.

TUBACEX GROUP 11
Handling and operating manual

Handling

• While handling coated pieces:

‒ Keep the protective sleeves on coated areas whenever possible.

‒ Avoid hitting the coated surfaces with hard surfaces, especially with
sharp edges and points.
‒ Wear protective gloves to prevent cuts from burrs or sharp edges,
together with other mandatory personal protective equipment in the
facility.

Storage

• If needed for logistical reasons at plant of

destination or intermediate storage facilities,
place the supplied packages either on ground
or on proper storage systems such us racks,
frames… according to specified stacking
capacity. (*)

• By default, keep the coated pieces inside the

original supplied package as far as possible,
until they need to be installed or making
additional operations is required. Insulate
electrically metals of different electro-potential
to avoid galvanic corrosion of uncoated parts.

NOTE: TC coating is not sensitive to humidity or ambient conditions. Follow usual recommendations to store metal tubes

Installation

On request, special finishing operations can be performed on coated pieces

prior to dispatching the material to required destination, such as beveling,
cutting, marking, weld coating, pre-assembly, ad-hoc packaging…

Installation

• Unless otherwise restricted by safety

regulations such as fire hazard, provided
liners/meshes should be kept whenever
possible during beveling, grinding, blasting or
welding processes on the piece itself or in the
vicinity, to prevent damages on coated surfaces
caused by projection of hot and/or high energy
particles. If in doubt, check with Tubacoat.

• On request, tube and fitting ends can be left

uncoated (inner/outer) to allow beveling,
welding and/or to perform expansion
processes either at fabricator or on-site.

TUBACEX GROUP 17
Handling and operating manual

Installation

• Use as much as possible Teflon or technical

plastic tools with rounded shapes in case
hitting the coated surfaces is required for
assembly purposes.

• In case coated surfaces have to be slid through

parts with sharp edges, such us heat exchanger
baffles/sheets, it is strongly recommended to
round the surfaces, increase the clearance (to
be checked with Tubacoat) and use plastic rings
or similar to facilitate the assembly and ensure
the required sealing in operation.

Installation

• Tube end flaring, flattening, expansion and/or

similar mechanical operations might damage
coated surfaces in the affected areas.

• On-site weld coating can be performed by

means of resistors or induction systems, if
needed, to ensure continuity of ceramic layer in
outer coated pieces. Weld coating to be carried
out by Tubacoat or authorized staff.

• For on-site coating of welds or expansion areas,

consult Tubacoat.

Operation Feasibility Comments

Tube and fitting ends can be beveled on request, either in factory or on site
Beveling  (standard figures). No detachments expected even when pieces are coated to
the ends
Keep protection sleeves on the piece or in the vicinity to prevent projection of
Welding  hot particles during the process that might lead to permanent damages
Avoid straight blasting against coated areas. Place protective screens or use
Shot blasting  plastic or walnut media to minimize negative effect on coated surfaces
No detachments expected with conventional technologies. Band saw strongly
Cutting  recommended. Avoid abrasive saw
Permanent damages of coating layer could occur on expanded area. To be
Expansion  analyzed in detail with Tubacoat prior to carrying out any expansion
Coated pieces can not be bent without permanent damages on affected area.
Bending  Any bending must be performed compulsorily before coating, in factory
To be performed by Tubacoat staff and ad-hoc equipment, either in factory
Weld coating  (preferred) or on-site

Operation & Maintenance

Do not expose coated pieces to higher temperature and/or more demanding

working/environmental conditions than those specified during engineering
and definition stages that served as a basis for designing the Tubacoat
proposed ad-hoc technical solution for the application.

Any relevant change in working conditions and/or environment might lead

to permanent damages and the consequent loss of properties of the coated
solution.

TUBACEX GROUP 23
Handling and operating manual

Operation & Maintenance

• Actual skin temperature of coated pieces

during operation must not exceed the specified
temperature limit of the coating.

• Any relevant change in real operation

conditions compared to the ones initially
specified and validated at laboratory might
lead to non optimal behavior of Tubacoat
proposed solution.

• It is recommended to perform regular

measurements of tube skin temperature with
thermocouples and/or infrared measurements

TUBACEX GROUP 24
Handling and operating manual

Operation & Maintenance

• Avoid straight projection of high energy

particles, sand blasting, soot blowers or
uncontrolled flow on coated surfaces during
operation and maintenance periods.

• If needed for commissioning or maintenance

purposes, Tubacoat coatings withstand high-
pressure water jets of standard cleaning
systems used in heat exchangers and other
dirty service equipment.
