BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS

The Writing Process

Developing your Thesis Statement
A thesis statement is the central idea of an essay, a claim or stand that you will develop in your
paper. It is the controlling idea of your essay. It gives your readers idea of what the paper is all about. It
reveals and summarizes that argument you intend to develop and defend
A strong thesis statement usually contains an element of uncertainty, risk, or challenge (Ramage,
Bean. And Johnson 2006:36). This means that your thesis statement should offer a debatable claim that
you can prove or disapprove in your essay. The claim should be debatable enough to let your readers
agree or disagree with you.
Your thesis statement should not merely announce something or state a fact. You should give
thesis tension by introducing ideas that may challenge your reader’s views. Not everyone may agree to it
and you will have to gather evidence in order for you to back up your thesis statement. (Source: Saqueton, G.M.
and Uychoco M. T. (2016). English for Academic and Professional Purposes, Quezon City: Rex Bookstore, Inc.)

Characteristics of an Effective Thesis Statement

1. Responds to the assignment by following instructions
2. Expresses the main idea in one to two sentences
3. Focuses on a specific issue
4. States a stand on the topic
5. Says something meaningful by answering the questions “So what?” “How?” “Why?”
6. Previews the rest of the essay by being placed in the introduction
7. Reflects a tone and point-of-view appropriate to the identified purpose and audience
More Guidelines on Writing Thesis Statement
1. Avoid making overly opinionated stands
2. Avoid making announcements

An outline is the general plan of what you intend to write. In preparing the outline, you have to
classify each information and its connection to your topic or subject. The sorted information may be
grouped according to content. From this grouped information, you can already provide headings – main
and subheadings – which are parallel in structure. In an outline, have at least two topics after each
heading and two for the subheadings.
Topic Outline - It is a form of outline that uses parallel phrases for the heading all throughout.
