Birches Poem analysis

This poem is in free verse format. This means that there is no rhyme scheme however

there is Iambic pentameter.

This poem starts with the description of what the speaker sees in the birch trees as they

see the birches so fragile yet so study as they tilt back and forth. This speaker sees a boy

swinging between them however these swringings between the trees doesn’t seem to keep

them bent down but rather ice-storms do. There is lots of imagery in the next couple of lines as

we can see white snow and opaque icicles with a hot winter sun in the morning with the falling

rain. We also see some onomatopoeia as the trees click with the rising of the breeze. This

breeze and clicking upon themselves turns the tree multi-colored and breaks their bark. The sun

then melts the crystal shells as they start to avalanche and glass is swept up and this looks like

an inner dome of heaven had fallen.

In this entire poem, there are many different literary devices. These literary devices

included alliteration as we see the repetition of the “c” sound, consonance and assonance with

the repetition of the “s” sound, “h” sound, “k” sound, and the “a” sound.

There is imagery of a little boy, who may have been the speaker when they were

younger, swinging from the trees and going back and forth and left and right. The boy is alone

for the passing of the seasons and the years. This boy was alone and unable to learn and do

things like a normal kid like play basketball. He thought that he had restrained and subdued the

trees. He did so that the trees no longer had any stiffness. All the trees had been bent and not

one was left. There were no more trees left for the boy to take over and swing on in joy. The

boy learned that he would need to climb the trees but not so much as to put the tip of the tree

to the ground. He would climb carefulls and at a small and steady pace. This steady pace and

careful climbing is like trying to fill a cup to the brim.

The boy flies forward with a switch as his feet come frontward. The speaker then relates

to the boy by seeing himself in the boyas the speaker also remembered their times swinging

from birch to birch. The speaker dreams of going back to this memory of enjoyment and

satisfaction where they didn’t have to worry about anything and live life. They want to feel the

wind in their face and cobwebs brushing their face. They want their eyes to water from the rush

of the air blowing in their eyes. The speaker wants to get away from everything like the earth

and their life. However the speaker doesn’t want this wish to be fully considered, understood,

or granted. The speaker believes that earth is the best and only place for love to bloom and for

love to take place. The speaker wants to live again and be able to climb the birch trees.

The speaker wants to be careless and have fun and be able to climb and swing on the

birch trees. They want to climb the branches with the snow and icicles. They want to go toward

heaven rather than actually to it. They would rather go in the upward direction of heaven than

actually go there. They want to go up, as high as they can until they just cannot anymore and

the tree starts to dip downward. This goes up and down, toward heaven and back down to

earth where they can spend their time.
