He was born in France after war; structuralist thinker;

“ if I don’t have a good analysis i’m lost”

Not a paper architect.

● Born in August 12 / 1943

● Began his architectural career in the 1970s
● Nouvel has broken the aesthetic of modernism to create a stylistic
language all his own.
● He places enormous importance on designing a building harmonious with
its surroundings .
● Early in his career , Nouvel become a key participant in intellectual
debates about architecture in france
● Nouvel doesn't draw, which was once considered an essential skill in the
shaping of architectural space
PHILOSOPHY

● Jean Nouvel is an architect of contrasts- mass and void, lights , and

dark ,traditional and contemporary
● It is this embodiment of architectural juxtaposition that makes Nouvel
so extraordinary
● Nouvel’s biggest idea is what he calls dematerialization , the interplay
of light and materiality, which gives the impression that materials
have vanished.
● Nouvel’s speciality is that he transforms the landscapes and tries to
blend them into the built forms.
● Unique approach, driven by the specificities of context, program, and
site has proven effective in numerous success around the world.
● His focus into architecture is one that reflects the modernity
● “ Despite his powerful personality he is exceptionally good at
allowing a building to take on a personality of its own

CONSISTY IN INNOVATION

“ STRETCHING THE BOUNDARIES”

● Scenegraphy; Architecture is in a way like cinema;

IMAGE +TIME+SPACE
ARCHITECTURE OF
EPOCH
Architecture is a man who says something

“ I place art in architecture and architecture in the city ”

CONTEXT
Architecture is the art of constraints

● I don’t create the same vocabulary of what is surrounding me, but

i find something to create a dialogue

● Opportunity as part of the context

MANIPULATION OF
LIGHT
● Considering lights to be another
materials for buildings
TECHNOLOGY
Institut du monde Arabe;

At the Arab World Institute I also began

to consider the question of light. The themes of
lights is reflected in the southern wall , which
consists entirely of camera- like reappears in
the stacking of the stairs, the blurring of
contours, the superimpositions, in
reverberations and reflections and shadows
DEMATERIALIZATION
Endless Tower;-

Endless what does it mean firstly we don't read the limits. Not just
laterly, But where is the beginning and the end? We can suppose
this tower spring from the centre of the earth, it rise from a crater
in the ground. The extremity disappears into the sky, and that's why
that tower is 350m height.
Dense at the base and extremely airy at the top, the outter can
always remains constant.
REAL VS VIRTUAL
Reflection vs Refraction
Fondation Cartier

Nouvel's gallery for the foundation cartier is an experience in

transparency and the perennial guest to remove the barrier
between inside and outside. Building “ box “ with glass walls
couldn't do the trick; He could see through the walls, but he
could be clearly either inside or outside the box.

TOWER
INTRODUCTION
•The Agbar Tower, is a 21st century skyscraper at Glories
Square, Barcelona. It was designed by French architect Jean
Nouvel in association with the Spanish firm b720 Architects.
It opened in June 2005 and was inaugurated officially by the
King of Spain on 16 September 2005.

•The Agbar Tower is located in the Poblenou neighborhood of

Barcelona and is named after its owners, the Agbar Group, a
holding company whose interests include the Barcelona
water company Aigües de Barcelona.

•Quite remarkable is the nocturnal lighting, that saturates

the tower's colors and turns it into a spectacular kind of
lighthouse.
ABOUT
•A water company headquarters, next to Glories Square. This
144 m tall, 35-storey tower is "a geyser under permanent,
calculated pressure" in Nouvel's words (the reflections of the
city lights on the glass cladding are a metaphor of water).
•A defining feature of the building is its nocturnal
illumination. It has 4,500 LED luminous devices that allow
generation of luminous images in the façade. In addition, it
has temperature sensors in the outside of the tower that
regulate the opening and closing of the glass blinds of the
façade of the building, reducing the consumption of energy
for air conditioning.
CONSTRUCTION
MATERIAL
The main materials used in the construction of the building are concrete
which comprises the structure of the tower and aluminium and glass in the
form of 59,619 strips of painted sheet metal of different colours, covering
2
the approximately 16,000 m of exterior surface.
INSPIRATION

•The bullet-shape silhouette of the building takes its

inspiration from a nearby, astonishing mountain
called Montserrat (one of the legendary, iconic myths
of Catalonia's history), and the wavy, organic
buildings of Gaudí (with a contemporary approach).
CONCEPT
● This is not a tower, or a skyscraper, in the American sense. It is a
more an emergence, rising singularly in the center of a generally calm
city. This tower is a fluid mass that bursts through the ground like a
geyser under permanent, calculated pressure.
● The surface of the building evokes water: smooth and continuous,
shimmering and transparent, its materials reveal themselves in
nuanced shades of color and light.
● The ambiguities of material and light make the Agbar tower resonate
against Barcelona’s skyline day and night, like a distant mirage,
marking the entry into the diagonal avenue from the Plaça de les
Glorias.
SPACES
Floors above ground
•Between the core and the outer 34 floors above ground, diaphanous without interior pillars are
deployed. Of these 28 are for offices, 3 are technical plants, one plant to the cafeteria, 1 floor for
multipurpose rooms and at the top of the tower ‘s top floor was allocated to overlook.
SPACES
•The offices provide completely free of columns surfaces
•Ceiling Height 2.60m
•Raised floor encapsulated with 15cm height free and finished in galvanized steel,
supporting 1.500kg/m2 overload.
•False ceiling plate making galvanized soundproof interior and concealed
•Luminaires recessed ceiling lighting and direct traffic areas and elevator lobbies.
Emergency lighting. Spark lighting by motion detectors.
•Centralized fire detection system. Sprinklers in the ceiling.
•Furniture for integrated facade modules.
•Fixed and casement windows.
•Voice-data wiring and electrical boxes installed under the floor and perimeter
facade socket.
•Kitchen -office per floor.
SPACES
•Underground Floors
•The 4 underground floors are distributed as
follows: 2 floors house the auditorium for 316
people and services such as goods receipt,
storage or files. The other two underground

LOUVRE
ABU DHABI
Inspired by the architecture and traditions of the United Arab Emirates, he

had designed a remarkable showcase for the

Louvre Abu Dhabi
.
LOCATION
Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates.
The Louvre Abu Dhabi is located on the island of Saadiyat ..
LOCATION
● The museum complex Louvre Abu

Dhabi is located on a coastal land of

sandy nature, almost 64,000m² of

surface.

● It is part of the Cultural District of

Saadiyat which will include three

Other museums and performing arts .

● COMPOSITION
● The museum complex is made up of 55 white volumes.

These volumes are

distributed in what appears to be a mini-city (or

medina), surrounded by water, and entirely covered by

a geometric dome that extends over

180m and is composed of almost

8,000 overlapping metal stars.

The art museum includes 8,000m² of galleries, the
Children's Museum, and also houses an auditorium, a
restaurant,shop and cafe .
INSPIRATION

The dome of the museum is inspired by the dome of the Arab architecture.
INSPIRATION

The ode to nature and the elements echoes the palms of Abu Dhabi: their leaves,
intercepting the bright light of the sun, diffuse it and scatter it on the ground.
INSPIRATION
Inspired by the falaj system of ancient Arab engineering, a circuit of water runs
through the museum, making this place a haven of freshness inviting to walk along
the water
INSPIRATION

The white volumes are arranged in a seemingly random pattern to recall the urban structure
of a medina.
● FORM
The centerpiece of Jean Nouvel's architecture

is a huge silver dome that

seems to float above this museum-town.

There is exists a symmetry in the shape of the

dome, but the asymmetry appears in the rest of

the composition. Overall, there is a visual balance.

main form of other pieces is the parallelepiped.

● FORM
The dome is a complex geometric structure of 7,850 stars superimposed on eight

layers and whose pattern is repeated in different sizes and angles.

LIGHTING

The Louvre Abu Dhabi benefits from natural

lighting: both lateral and zenithal.
« When the sun's rays illuminate it, the light is

filtered creating under the dome a striking

effect known as the 'rain of light'.

LIGHTING

The Louvre Abu Dhabi also benefits from artificial lighting.

FACADE

The façades, overlooking both the sea and the

urban landscape of Abu Dhabi, invite to the walk

and the conversation.

The façades are of the open type

MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION

A dome of 180 m in diameter covers two

thirds of the museum, bringing shade, and
reducing energy consumption
MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION
The total weight of the dome is 7,500
tons (the same as that of the Eiffel
Tower).
– It consists of eight (8) layers: four (4)
outer layers coated with stainless steel,
and four (4) inner layers coated with
Aluminum.

– The dome forms a tapestry of 7,85 stars

The largest of which was a dia of 13m and
Weighs 1.3tons .
MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION

The structure is supported by only four

(4) points, so as to appear floating in

the air, and required a submerged complex

subsoil, made in salt-water- resistant
concrete and supplied with a row of steel
piles sunk into the sea.
DK
KONCERTHUSET
LOCATION:- Copenhagen, DENMARK

TYPE :- CONCERT HALL

CAPACITY:- The concert complex consists of four halls

with the main auditorium seating 1,800 people.

The opening of DR Koncerthuset means a national and international concert venue

for Denmark and a new architectural landmark for the capital. Jean Nouvel’s
unique building puts Copenhagen on a level with other cities around the world
which provide the best modern acoustic and visual setting for concertgoers.
CONSTRUCTION
● The construction, begun in February, 2003,
was finished in January, 2009. The Queen of
Denmark inaugurated the venue on January 17,
2009.
● The main features of the building are a
4,000m² cable net façade and 500m² glass
roof, both of which were designed and built by
Austrian specialist contractor Waagner Biro.
STUDIO 1 KONCERTSALEN (GRAND HALL)
Koncertsalen is the biggest of DR Koncerthuset four
studios. The stage is in the middle of the hall, while the
1800 seats go all the way round on multi-level terracing.
The amphitheatre structure is inspired by the Berlin
Philharmonia, while the warm, golden colours of the hall
have been carried over from the old DR Concert Hall.
Behind the stage towers the organ, and the atmospheric
indirect lighting by way of reflectors on the walls
completes the elegant idiom of the hall.
STUDIO 2
Studio 2 is inspired by the big production studios in Hollywood. On the plywood walls
hang large panels with portraits of selected soloists, conductors and composers printed
on them as decoration.
The portraits were processed with a special vector graphics technique, that turn the
images into black and white contrasts, then stensiled on the plywood walls.
STUDIO 3
Studio 3, the smallest unit of the Concert Hall, can be customized
for any event since there is no fixed stage or audience seating. The
black walls, in alternating polished and matte panelling, is inspired
by a grand piano. The floor is stained oak.
STUDIO 4
Studio 4 is also flexible and can be adapted to a wide variety of
events. The walls and ceiling are in deep red shades. The metal
coffers are aluminum, the absorbent surface is felt. The floors are
stained oak.
