Our Program
Learn theoretical foundations and practical techniques to help learners develop proficiency in
English.
The one-year Teachers of English as a Foreign Language - International Ontario College Graduate
Certificate program prepares you, through hands-on and theoretical experience, to teach English
as a Foreign Language (EFL).
Gain specialized knowledge in English as a Foreign Language methodology, teaching techniques,
curriculum design and evaluation that will prepare you to teach EFL to adult learners internationally.
Take classes ranging from, but not limited to:
• pedagogical grammar
• language learning and culture
• teaching, listening and speaking
• educational technology
In this program, you complete a teaching field placement in your country of residence, or an online
practicum placement in a Canadian classroom.
Classes are conducted live synchronously through a web-conferencing platform. During classes,
you work collaboratively with your Canadian colleagues.
Graduates may find employment opportunities teaching EFL to both children and adults, in
elementary and postsecondary schools. You might also pursue careers with postsecondary
institutions, and in the private sector.

Employment
Graduates may find employment as teachers of English as a Foreign Language to both children
and adults, in elementary and secondary schools, postsecondary institutions and the private sector
anywhere outside of Canada. If they complete the Canadian practicum online, graduates may find 1
teaching opportunities in Canada where English is taught to adults: in community programs, post-

Program of Study
Program Eligibility
• An undergraduate (Bachelor`s) university degree in any discipline is required to enter the
program.
• Applicants with international transcripts must provide proof of the subject-specific
requirements noted above and may be required to provide proof of language proficiency.
Domestic applicants with international transcripts must be evaluated through the International
Credential Assessment Service of Canada (ICAS) or World Education Services (WES).
• IELTS-International English Language Testing Service-Overall band of 6.5 with a minimum
of 6.0 in each band; OR TOEFL-Internet-based (iBT)-overall 88, with the minimum of 22 in
each component: Reading 22; Listening: 22 Speaking: 22, Writing: 22.

Additional Information
This program is offered both on campus and in a synchronous online format.
If taken entirely online, this program does not require a Canadian study permit.
Both the full-time and part-time options to take this program are available.
The full-time program offering is completed in two consecutive terms, Fall and Winter. The part-
time program offering can be completed in as few as three consecutive terms (Fall, Winter and
Spring) but must be completed within four years.
Classes are accessed online synchronously (live) through a web-conferencing application provided
by the College.
International students will participate in live virtual classroom activities with their Canadian
colleagues.

TSL0011 Assessment and Evaluation in Second Language Teaching
Assessment and evaluation of ESL learners' progress is an indispensable part of effective teaching.
Students learn the basic principles, procedures and techniques of assessing and evaluating ESL
students' language proficiency. As they practise the evaluation of learner performance in reading,
writing, listening and speaking through developing and critiquing tests and rubrics, students also
explore alternative methods of evaluating language proficiency, as well as standardized language
testing.

TSL5259 Practicum
Firsthand experience in classroom observation and teaching in an adult ESL classroom under
guidance of experience mentors prepare pre-service teachers for independent work in the
classroom. Through completing their 30 hours of classroom observation and 20 hours of practice
teaching, students complete their placement in their country of residence or virtually in Canada
to enhance their understanding of teaching and classroom management techniques. This
understanding is enhanced by participation in various other teaching-related activities, such as
small group facilitation, one-on-one tutoring and marking, and classroom assessment.
