REVIEW QUESTIONS
Micrometers
1. How many threads per inch are there on a standard inch micrometer?
• The spindle of a micrometer graduated for the Imperial and US customary measurement
systems has 40 threads per inch, so that one turn moves the spindle axially 0.025 inch (1 ÷
40 = 0.025), equal to the distance between adjacent graduations on the sleeve.

2. What is the value of :

a.) Each line on the sleeve? 0.025

b.) Each number line on the line? 100
c.) Each line on the thimble? 0.01

3. Describe briefly the principle of the vernier micrometer.

• Vernier micrometer is similar to standard micrometer but it has also graduations known
as vernier scale on the sleeve. It is one of precision measuring tools and it is used to
measure diameter or thickness of workpiece with accurate measurement.

4. Describe the procedure for reading a vernier micrometer.

✓ Read the vernier micrometer as you would a standard micrometer.

✓ Note the line on the vernier scale that coincides with a line on the thimble. This line will
indicate the number of ten-thousandths that must be added to the reading in step 1.
✓ Refer to Fig. 2. The reading of the vernier micrometer is as follows:
✓ #2 is shown on the sleeve 2 x .100 = .200
✓ One line is visible past the number 1 x .025 = .025
✓ The #11 line on the thimble is just past the index line 11 x .001 = .011
✓ In Fig. 2, the #3 line on the vernier scale coincides with a line on the thimble. 3 x .0001
= .0003
✓ Total Reading .2363 in.

Explain how to adjust a micrometer:

a. To remove play in the spindle threads.

• Back off the thimble.
• Insert C-spanner into slot or hole of adjusting nut.
• Turn adjusting nut clockwise until play between threads has been eliminated.

b. For accuracy.

• Find set screw and loosen it.

• Close micrometer using friction stop.
• Insert LARGE end of wrench in hole on external cylinder.
• Use wrench to rotate cylinder until Zero is aligned.
• GENTLY Open micrometer to 0.1” and tighten set screw.

Metric Micrometers

6. What are the basic differences between a metric and an inch micrometer?
• Metric vernier micrometer and inch micrometer are two types of micrometer which is used
to measure inner and outer diameter, thickness or thread pitch. Metric vernier micrometer
gives the measurement in SI units which is millimeter while the inch micrometer gives the
measurement in English units which is inch.

7. What are the value of one division on:

a. The sleeve above the index line? 1 mm

b. The sleeve below the index line? 0.5 mm
c. The thimble? 0.01 mm

Indicating Micrometers

8. State two uses for an indicating micrometer.

• Indicator Micrometer is basically a micrometer which is used to measure diameter or

thickness when accuracy is required. It is one of the precision measuring tools.

Screw Thread Micrometers

9. Describe the construction of the contact points of a screw thread micrometer.

• This kind of micrometer has a pointed spindle and a double-V swivel anvil, which is equal
to the outside diameter less the depth of one thread.

10. What dimension of the thread is indicated on a screw thread micrometer reading?

• Metric thread micrometers are available in sizes from 0 to 25 mm, 25 to 50 mm, 50 to 75

mm, and 75 to 100 mm. A set of 12 anvil and spindle inserts is available for thread pitches
from 0.4 to 6 mm.

11. List four ranges covered by screw thread micrometers.

• 8 to 13 TPI
• 14 to 20 TPI
• 22 to 30 TPI
• 32 to 40 TPI

12. How many threads be measured accurately with a screw thread micrometer?

• The spindle of a micrometer graduated for the Imperial and US customary measurement
systems has 40 threads per inch, so that one turn moves the spindle axially 0.025 inch (1
÷ 40 = 0.025), equal to the distance between adjacent graduations on the sleeve.
