6. You have identified a learner requiring LLN support. How would you approach the learner to
communicate the need for LLN support? Discuss this with your facilitator

 Make sure learner is comfortable with the subject

 Mae sure that learner has a clear understanding where you are coming from
 Ensure that learner is alone
 Make sure learner agrees with you instead of forcing the issue
 Try to get to tell you where the problems are and how it can be fixed together
 Ensure that there is enough support for learner to back yourself
 Tell learner there is no hard basket case

7. How would you approach a learner who is undertaking training in Australia from a different
cultural background to communicate that they have an LLN issue requiring support to complete
the course they are undertaking? You can use someone you know from your workplace or a
fictitious person. When answering the question state the cultural background they are from. You
will need to do cultural research to answer this question.

Our learner is a refugee from Africa, suffering from persecution from political group. Learner as political
asylum, now residing permanently in Australia and wants to learn Auto Electrics which he started back in
Africa. Learner cannot speak proper English and is finding it very hard to adapt and feels lost.
- First, we need to assist Learner in very basic language skills. I approached learner after the class and
sat with him and calmly explained that I have notice the struggle and I want to genuinely help.
- Learner agrees and start to open up with the issues and he needs help.
- Learner lives in Taree and we know that the council offers two days, 2 hour course for free in the
community hall. So I contact the officer in charge at Taree and make the introduction. The course
seem to help and learner is showing some improvement.
- So I sat with Learner few weeks later and we design a plan together and slot some different tasks so
Learner was not too overwhelmed.
- I introduced Learner with some elder and more patient community members that were willing to
accept Learner in the Bowling game. Learner gets some company, feels accepted and part of the
community.
- I also arranged few one on one classes with our LLN specialist who plotted a chart for Learner and
some goals where he wants learner to be in few months.
- I also arranged for a volunteer interpreter who is fluent in both languages and attended some classes
to help out in his own native language as well as English.
- I spoke to the Library and we got some visuals made and also used video to explain some scenarios,
especially with WHS and what is the responsibilities as a worker and employer in Australia.
- I also introduced Learner with our local Auto Electrician and Learner was happy to donate some time
and learn some more about Australian Standards and hoping to become an apprentice soon.
- The Learner’s progress is kept on track and I make sure that all support is there to make sure Learner is
not lost again.
