Why is Corruption in the Philippines persistent?

Corruption is frequently compared to something like a deadly disease, and whereas no society
can be entirely free from disease, a never-ending problem that citizens simply ignore until it
worsens. It is not only bad for the conscience, but it also has a negative impact on the economy
and is where corruption occurs. It is defined as the misappropriation of government funds for
personal gain. When an authority, more specifically politicians, abused their power for their own
private interests and benefits, this is referred to as corruption. There is no doubt that corruption is
a major problem in the Philippines that must be addressed. Corruption undermines trust, erodes
democracy, stifles economic growth, and aggravates disparities, poverty, economic disparity, and
the ecological disaster. It demonstrates that corruption can be seen in society's social, political,
and economic aspects. Corruption is increasingly recognized as an important problem in our
society and government.

Moreover, high corruption levels severely restrict the efficiency of businesses operating in the
Philippines. Extensive bribery within the public administration and vague and complex laws
make foreign companies vulnerable to extortion and manipulation by public officials.
[ CITATION Ris20 \l 1033 ]. Furthermore, as we are going to relate the corruption to the
concept of applied ethics, a branch of ethics which consists of the analysis of specific,
controversial moral issues such as abortion, animal rights, or euthanasia. [ CITATION Int \l 1033
] Business practices assesses moral issues such as the social responsibilities of capitalist business
practices, the moral status of corporate entities, market manipulation, insider trading, basic
worker protections, employment discrimination, racial equality, health screenings, and
whistleblowing. It is the application of moral consideration in a practical way. The Philippines
has histories about how the administration stole the treasury of our country.

In addition, Ferdinand Marcos' story was the one that brought Filipino corruption to light.

Asian archipelago nation. Marcos’ regime would span 20 years and become increasingly

authoritarian and corrupt. [ CITATION His \l 1033 ] Most Filipinos would refer to him as a
dictator rather than a president. Marcos used a massive amount of crowd violence against his
opponents. Furthermore, he established a government in which the wealth gap between the rich
and the poor was wider than ever, and in which only a few people he favored held power. People
were upset, and there were numerous rebellions. The supporters of Cory Aquino staged one of
the most well-known uprisings, which sparked a revolution in the country. In order for Cory
Aquino to mobilize a popular democratic movement, she needed Radio Veritas, a 24-hour AM
radio station operated by the Roman Catholic Church, because it served as the primary
communication platform for the democratic opposition. [ CITATION Tav \l 1033 ] By leading of
Cory Aquino with the Filipino people they ended up the abusive power of Marcos.

Without a doubt, the corruption is still exists throughout administrations, because of the sense
that those people involving in that allegation are gaining or earning money easily without even
knowing. They are easily to have access on it because they’re on the position to govern people or
maybe then have connection to the government. People are losing their trust to the government
because of the consistent corruption issues that also affect the entire budget allocated for the
innovation and projects for the people of the Philippines. Maybe that issue will not diminish as
soon as possible because it’s part of our culture and history. We should open our mind and don’t
tolerate the ignorance on us.

Immediately, corruption is about on social discrimination and abused. It is not easily diminished
but we should know how to be informed to all things that happening in our country. It’s one of
the issues that can relate to applied ethics, which is against on morality and ethical behavior. As
corruption is part of our history this may be unstoppable. Like on the term of Marcos, people
made rebellious stuff against Marcos because of they know some of dirty works of the
administration. Yet, we can see the social consciousness of the people who were living in that era
that they fight for their freedom from dictatorial system of government. The goal of eradicating
corruption is a noble one.  However, we should take the initiative and begin the journey; there
may be setbacks across the way, but we must never give back and rise to keep striving not only
for ourselves, but also for subsequent generations.
