1) The document discusses different theories of planetary formation - the encounter theory, planetesimal theory, tidal theory, and nebular theory.
2) It provides an activity where the student must arrange events of planetary formation in chronological order based on the planetesimal and tidal theories.
3) The student then answers questions to test their understanding of the differences between these theories and why some are no longer widely accepted.

Lesson 4: Encounter Theory
Check your Understanding Arrange the following events in order. Write numbers 1 to 5.
Planetesimal theory
3 Materials ejected from the protosun condensed into
planetesimals.
5 The oceans and the atmosphere were formed on Earth
through volcanic activities.
4 The planets formed by accretion.
2 The protosun ejects filaments of materials.
1 An intruding star nearly collided with a protosun.
Tidal theory
5 These bodies further condensed into planets.
2 The gravitational attraction pulled the mass of dust and gas
from the remaining nebula around the sun.
4 The particles clumped to form cosmic bodies of different
sizes.
3 The gas particles then condensed into liquid and solid states.
1 A star passed near the sun.
Challenge Yourself Answer the following questions. Limit your answers in 2 to 3 sentences.
1. Why is the encounter theory called such?
Answer: The encounter theory is called such because it proposes that the planets formed from the material ejected from the sun during an encounter with another celestial object. It has several forms, including the planetesimal theory and the tidal theory.
2. What is the difference of the nebular theory and planetesimal theory?
Answer: The difference between nebular theory and planetesimal theory is that the nebular theory describes Earth starting from molten mass. While planetesimal theory, on the other hand, describes Earth starting from a solid mass smaller than its present size. The oceans and the atmosphere were formed on Earth through volcanic activities.
3. Why is the planetesimal theory no longer accepted today?
Answer: The planetesimal theory is no longer accepted today because of the fact that hot material from the sun expands and dissipates rather than contracts. In addition, the force from the passing star will pull dust and gases far away from the sun, so that they would not be able to form the planets in the solar system.
4. What is the difference of planetesimal and tidal theory?
Answer: The difference between the two is that planetesimal theory describes Earth starting from a solid mass smaller than its present size. On the other hand, tidal theory proposes that the hot gas from the passing star condensed into planets instead of condensing into planetesimals.
5. Is the tidal theory widely accepted? Why or why not?
Answer: The tidal theory was widely accepted because it explains how the solar system was formed very clearly. It explains how the solar system was formed and all other things that are related to it like the sizes, formation and position of terrestrial and jovian planets. The theory precisely gives enough evidence to prove that the solar system really formed as a result of a near collision between a passing star and the sun.
