The show is about the Newsboys Strike of 1899 and is adapted from the 1992 Disney film. It will be performed in April 2019 and auditions are being held in December 2018.

The show is inspired by the Newsboys Strike of 1899 in New York City and follows the character Jack Kelly, who is based on real-life figures from the strike. It became a Broadway musical in 2012.

Auditions will have separate vocal and dance components. The vocal audition will require singing a selection from the pre-approved song list. The dance audition will involve learning and performing a jazz and tap combination.

Spring 2019 Overview

Disney’s Newsies

Description: Inspired by the Newsboys Strike of 1899 and adapted from the 1992 Disney live-action film, Newsies became an
unlikely Broadway hit in 2012. Although Newsies is ultimately a work of fiction, the historical strike that took place in July 1899
was every bit as dramatic and major characters found throughout the musical are rooted in historical figures like Kid Blink and
Morris Cohen who were the inspiration for Jack Kelly or Nellie Bly who inspired the character Katherine Plumber. Winning two
Tony Awards for Best Choreography and Best Original Score and nominated for a Grammy, Newsies is one of the most popular
musicals in America.

community. It is expected that all students, from Calvert Hall or females from outside schools, will treat each person
in this program with respect.
• Actors must attend every scheduled session where they are expected. Not every actor will be called for every practice.
Actors are expected to know their schedule, arrive at least five minutes before scheduled start time, and be available
for the duration of the scheduled time.. All conflicts that keep actors from making their scheduled time must be
cleared and approved through the Director prior to the start of the scheduled rehearsal period. Two (2) unexcused
absences may result in losing your assigned role or being asked to drop the show. Please review sample calendar
at auditions while identifying conflicts.
• Due to the physicality of this show, the CHC Theatre program will require actors, specifically newsies, to participate
in a physical fitness program. All actors who audition for a newsie role agree to attend and actively engage in this
program.
• All actors are expected to stay for strike after the close of both shows on Sunday. There will be a mini-strike after
the first Sunday performance. There will be a full strike on Sunday, April 22nd. All actors should be prepared to
