6 Autumn weather and adverbs of degree

Look at the box below.

The line below shows adverbs of degree.

We use adverbs of degree to show the level of something.


They go before the adjective.
It’s very cold in London at this time of year. (very cold = there is a high level of cold)
They answer the question how.....?
Q: How rainy is it today?
A: It’s quite rainy.
We can use not with very.
It’s not very windy in Cracow.
We can’t use not with a bit, a little, fairly, and extremely in this way.
It’s not a little hot in Madrid.
(When you use not with quite the meaning is different.)

Complete the sentences below with an adverb of degree like in the example.

1. It rained a lot yesterday.


It was extremely/very rainy yesterday.
2. I think it’s going to rain. There are a lot of clouds.
I think it’s going to rain. It is cloudy.
3. It’s colder than usual today. But tomorrow will be colder.

4. There is a strong wind. Be careful if you go outside.

5. It isn’t very rainy. You might not need your umbrella.

Now work with a partner. Using adverbs of degree, talk about the autumn weather in your home
town. Use the example below to help you.
