Course Outcomes: Through this course students should be able to

• Comprehend the relevance of fundamentals and applications of chemical sciences in the


field of engineering.

• Fathom about properties of materials, their development and applications.

• Implement the principles of chemistry for solving different problems of the contemporary
engineering fields.

Unit I
Water and its Treatment : Types of hardness, Units of hardness of water,
Determination of hardness by EDTA method, Alkalinity of water and its significance,
Boiler feed water and its treatment, Softening methods and numerical problems
based on these methods, membrane based processes, chlorination of water,
Specifications for drinking water
Unit II
Polymers : Basics of Polymer chemistry, Degree of polymerization, Classification of
polymers, Structure-property relationship, Molecular shape and Crystallinity, glass
transition temperature, basic factors affecting Tg with examples (no details),
thermoplastics and thermo-sets, elastomers-structure, applications, curing
techniques, synthesis and uses of polymers, conducting polymers, Fabrication of
polymers (Compression/Injection/Extrusion moulding)
Unit III
Nanomaterials : Introduction to Nanomaterials, Bucky-balls and Carbon nanotubes
as model nanomaterials, electronic and mechanical properties, synthesis of nano
materials: top down and bottom up approach, applications of nano materials-
catalysis, electronic and telecommunication, medicines and energy sciences
Composites : basics of composites, composition and characteristic properties of
composites, types of composites- particle, fibre reinforced, structural and their
applications
Lubricants : types of lubricants and mechanism of lubrication, purpose of
lubrication, additives of lubricants, physical and chemical properties of lubricants
Unit IV
Electrochemistry : Introduction to electrolytes, electrochemical cells and cell
conductance, Cell-constant determination, specific and molar conductance
(numericals), Single electrode potentials (origin and HDL), electrolytic and galvanic
cells, EMF series and Nernst equation, Cells EMF measurement and numerical
problems, Thermodynamic overview of Electrochemical processes, Reversible and
irreversible cells
Unit V
Corrosion : Definition and scope of corrosion, direct chemical corrosion,
Electrochemical corrosion and different mechanisms, Types of electrochemical
corrosion-Galvanic and concentration cells, Types of electrochemical corrosion-
differential aeration corrosion, water-line corrosion and pitting corrosion, Types of
electrochemical corrosion- intergranular and soil corrosion and factors affecting
corrosion, Protection of corrosion-Ceramic coating, Electroplating process
Unit VI
Energy sciences : Fuels, types of fuels, calorific value, determination of calorific
value, theoretical calorific value and numerical problems, analysis of coal, refining of
petroleum, liquid fuels, fuels of IC engines, octane and cetane values, knocking and
anti-knocking agents, cracking of oils, fundamentals of primary cells, rechargeable
batteries, Ni-Cd, Ni-metal hydride battery, Li-ion battery, characteristics of batteries,
fuel cells, principles, applications, advantages/disadvantages
