News Article - Face To Face Classes
Due to the crisis brought on by the Corona Virus Disease 2019, also known as the
COVID-19, many people have suffered and been affected, including the education system
of the Philippines, where many students are struggling academically due to new modes
of learning: modular and online classes.
For over two years, the world has not been the same as it was before due to the
pandemic, and following the entire lockdown in March 2020, schools and educational institutions
also shuttered in order to safeguard students and staff members from coming into touch with the
virus.
Due to the challenges encountered by both sides, people are calling for an academic
break or ease, which began last year and has continued to the present, resulting in the
#LigtasBalikEskuwela trend all around the country.
According to UNICEF, many students did not enroll last year, with 29 percent of primary
students not being contacted, which is alarming.
Many students choose to discontinue their studies since some of them are not privileged
to continue; others struggle with how to do online classes without the necessary resources, no
guardians to educate them, and insufficient government assistance.
Furthermore, the Philippines is one of only two nations in the world that have yet to
reopen schools following the World Health Organization's proclamation of a pandemic in March
last year.
With the unending call for #LigtasBalikEskuwela, president Rodrigo Duterte approved
120 schools for limited face-to-face classes last September, in order to know if the pilot run
would be successful in reopening the schools amidst the deadly virus.
