The document provides instructions for making baby booties from scrap fabric using simple sewing techniques.

The materials required are fabric for the outer, lining and interfacing, elastic, optional items like buttons and felt, and sewing notions.

The bootie pieces - upper, sole, heel and straps - need to be cut out from the main fabric, lining and interfacing using the provided templates. The right pieces need to be flipped versions of the left.

Easy Baby Booties

The above booties are sewn from my leftover scraps of

fabric. You can also opt for your fabric stash provided you
find the right fabrics, colors and prints in the right
combination. For the summer months, you can choose
canvas for the outer and heavy weight cotton for the lining.
You may also use cotton or corduroy for the outer. Sewn in
fleece for the lining, these booties are a perfect pair to keep
those tiny feet warm and cosy during the winter months.
These booties are meant for babies who have not started
toddling. If you wish to make one meant for those unsteady
steps, use jiffy grip for the outer sole. You can also use an
extra layer of felt in between the lining and outer sole for
that extra thickness.

Take the fabric scraps and the interfacing required for the
booties outer and lining.
Cut the pattern templates for the upper, sole and heel at the
end of this PDF.Keep the templates on the fabric, mark and
cut out the pieces.

Note that for the right sole piece, you will have to flip the
template horizontally after marking the left sole piece.
The above applies to the strap pieces also. There are four
strap pieces required. So, after cutting the two strap pieces,
you will have to flip the template horizontally for the
remaining two.

You will need:

1) Two uppers from the main piece, two from the lining
piece and two from the interfacing pieces.
2) Two sole pieces from the main fabric, two from the
lining and two from the interfacing.
3) Two heel pieces from the main fabric and two from the
lining.
4) Four strap pieces from the lining fabric.

Sewing

Fuse the interfacing onto the wrong side of the main upper
pieces, following the manufacturer instructions. Make sure to
leave equal space all around while fusing.

Repeat the same on the two sole lining pieces.

Let’s move on to the straps. If you wish to avoid the straps

and make it plain, skip to page 10.

Take two of the strap pieces and keep them layered with the
right sides together and aligning the edges. Sew around the
edge, leaving the slanting shorter edge open (this is to turn it
inside- out).

Turn the strap inside-out; press taut and topstitch around the
edge as marked above to make it neat and crisp. Finish the
other strap also in the same way.

Let’s secure it onto the main upper piece.

Place the strap over the right side of the main upper piece,
½-inch above its straight edge, lining up the curved edges and
sew to secure. Next take the other main upper piece and the
strap and secure the strap on to the upper but in the
opposite direction as shown above.
Let’s move on to the heel pieces.

Take the heel piece and lining and layer them with the right
sides together, aligning the edges. Sew them together along
the straight upper edge.

Turn over to the right side and press.

Topstitch along the upper edge. Next sew a straight line, ½-

inch below the upper edge. This is to make a casing for the
elastic.
Take the required length of elastic, referring to the table-2
above. Cut it into two equal halves.

Take one of the elastic pieces and insert it through the casing
using a safety pin.

Secure the ends of the elastic on both sides by sewing back

and forth a few times.
Repeat the steps on the other heel piece, lining and elastic.

Next we attach the heel piece onto the main upper piece.

Keep the straight shorter edge of the heel piece, aligned with
the straight edge of the main upper piece, with the right
sides together and pin. Note that the elasticized edge faces
the center.

Blissfulsewing.blogspot.com Page 12

Do the same with the other shorter edge of the heel piece
and pin. Sew the two pieces together along the pinned
edges.
Next we attach the upper lining to the main upper piece.

Keep the upper lining over the done upper, with the right
sides together and aligning the edges. Sew along the straight
edge, leaving a ¼-inch seam.

Turn the lining over to the right side, pull out the heel piece
tight and you will see that your bootie has started taking
shape. Topstitch along the straight edge of the upper to
make it neat and crisp. Take care to keep the strap out of the
way while sewing.

You may go on and add your embellishments now. You can

make the bow, referring to page 23 or make your fabric
buttons, referring to my tutorial here:
http://blissfulsewing.blogspot.in/2014/04/fabric-covered-
buttons-tutorial-how-to.html#.U7GD5fmSwSN
Hand- sew or hot- glue the bow over the center of the upper
or the buttons onto the ends of the strap.
Next we attach the sole lining onto the finished upper.

Place the sole lining with the right side facing up and keep
the upper over it matching the center markings. While
selecting your sole piece, make sure that the buttoned end
of the strap comes along the outer edge of you bootie.

Pin all around, aligning the edges.

Sew around the edge, removing the pins as you go.

If you would like extra thickness for your sole, you may now
cut the felt sole in the size of the main sole piece, keep it
under the lining and sew.
Let’s now attach the outer sole piece onto the booties.

inches after you print it out, all your pattern pieces would have
printed at the right size.

Instructions for cutting out the template pieces

1. There are templates for the sole, heel, upper and strap pieces.

2. The templates for the strap pieces for all ages are given
separately in the last page of the PDF.

3. Cut along the solid black line for the main body template.

4. Cut along the dashed line for the interfacing template.
