If you want to take the whole family on holiday, and keep everybody happy, then I have found just the place
for you. I recently went with a group of friends to stay at the Greenwood Holiday Village, which is open
from May until October.
Built in the centre of a forest, Greenwood is a great place to stay whatever the weather. Its main attraction
for families is the indoor World of Water, where young and old can have fun in the different pools. Some of
these, however, are for serious swimmers only.
For sporty people, the Country Club Offers tennis, squash and badminton. If your children are too young to
join in these sports, there are activity clubs. Greenwood is a good place for families as it is traffic-free – you
explore on foot or by bike. Some people complained that this was inconvenient. but I was pleased to be out
in the fresh air. For evening entertainment, there are shows and cinemas.
Accommodation is in a variety of apartments Of different sizes. These have up to four bedrooms, a kitchen
and a bathroom, as well as a dining area. Before going, I thought the apartments might not be big enough for
all of us, but I was pleasantly surprised – it was not too crowded at all.
I'll definitely go back to Greenwood next year. Why don't you give it a try? Visit their website for further
information now!

PART 3: You are going to read an article about the possibility of intelligent life elsewhere in the
universe. Choose the most suitable heading from the list (A-I) for each part (1-8). (2 points)
Scientists are increasingly convinced of the existence of other intelligent life forms. Where should we be
looking?
1.
Ever since people realized the Earth was just a tiny part of the universe, they have wondered about the
existence of other intelligent life might be found on Mars or Venus, our two nearest planets, we know that
no intelligent life existed there.
2.
The Earth’s position in relation to the Sun makes it the only planet in our solar system which is obviously
capable of sustaining life. If we were nearer the Sun, there would be a thicker layer of cloud around us: this
would trap heat, causing the temperature to rise. Within a short time, the Earth would turn into a desert,
completely unsuitable for life. If we were further away from the Sun, there would not be enough heat to
prevent water from freezing. The polar ice caps would expand, and the sea level would fall. Before long, the
Earth would become an Arctic wasteland.
3.
Many people claim to have seen unidentified flying objects (UFOS), proving that alien life must exist. Most
scientists, however, believe UFO sightseeing to be imaginary or to have a rational explanation. The
formation of crop circle (strange patterns that appear in fields of wheat) in different part of the world was
once claimed to be evidence of alien activity. Now these circles are thought to be either a natural
phenomenon or the work of hoaxes. And the scientists certainly do not believe some people’s claims to have
been abducted by aliens.
5
4.
Ironically, the US government is to blame for the biggest UFO story of all. In 1947, a mysterious crash took
place near a government airbase in New Mexico. For many years, the US government denied that anything
strange had taken place. This led some people to conclude that the government was covering up evidence of
an alien spacecraft that had crashed. Recently more information has been released. It turns out that the
wreckage was part of a top-secret aircraft and nothing to do with UFOs at all.
5.
Sceptics dismiss the idea of other life forms as complete nonsense. Frank Drake, an astronomer, has worked
out an equation to estimate the number of civilizations in our galaxy. The equations complicated and relies
on a lot of guesswork. Even so, it is taken seriously by scientists, who have calculated that there may be
several billion civilizations in our galaxy alone. Telescopes have detected 1,000 million galaxies in the
universe, so the probability of intelligent life becomes extremely high.
6.
The best proof of life beyond Earth would be to come face to face with aliens from another planet. But
unless they visit us, this won’t happen. Space travel to even the nearest star, Alpha Centauri, is at present
totally impossible because of the distance. Modern spacecraft travel about 36,000 kph. At this speed, it
would take 12,000 years to reach Alpha Centauri. We might like the idea of encountering aliens, but it is
unrealistic to expect it to happen.
7.
So scientists are pinning their hopes on exchanging messages with alien civilizations, if they exist. They are
scanning the universe for radio waves sent as signals from aliens. However, there are a number of problems
with this approach. How do we know a radio wave is a signal? If it is, how do we decode what it means?
Moreover, the message may have taken centuries to reach us; any reply we send just take just as long.
8.
For many years Frank Drake’s Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute in California has
been monitoring the radio signals we receive from outer space for signs of artificial origin. When the US
government cut the Institute funding, SETI started a project involving the personal computers of people
around the world, called SETI@home. To link up, you register with the SETI website, download the
necessary software and a small section of the universe appears on your screen. This is monitored for signals
while your computer is not in use. If your computer helps to detect extra-terrestrial life, you can be named as
a co-discoverer.
