Part 3- Pie Charts
The Goals of this Chapter:
1. Read and interpret the Bar Graphs, Line
Graphs and Pie Charts.
2. Construct simple line graphs.

Pie Charts
Definision
A pie chart (also be called a
circle or sector graph) is a The total = 100%
graph using a divided circle
(looks like a cake, pie or
pizza cut into pieces) where
each section represents a
percentage of the total.
This chart is used to
compare parts of a whole.
Parts of a Pie Chart
● Title of the Chart.
● Label of items for each sections.
● Value / Percentage / Degree for each sections.
How to draw a Pie Chart?

Example : Imagine, you survey your friends to find the kind of movie
they like best:

Step 1 → put your data into a table (like above), then add up all the
values to get a total.
Step 2 → divide each value by the total and multiply by 100% to get a
percent.

4/20 x 100% 5/20 x 100% 6/20 x 100% 1/20 x 100% 4/20 x 100%
= 400% / 20 = 500% / 20 = 600% / 20 = 100% / 20 = 400% / 20
= 20% = 25% = 30% = 5% = 20% 100%
Step 3 → figure out how many degrees for each "pie slice" (correctly called a
sector).
A Full Circle has 360 degrees, so we do this calculation:

4/20 x 100% 5/20 x 100% 6/20 x 100% 1/20 x 100% 4/20 x 100%
= 400% / 20 = 500% / 20 = 600% / 20 = 100% / 20 = 400% / 20 100%
= 20% = 25% = 30% = 5% = 20%

4/20 x 360° 5/20 x 360° 6/20 x 360° 1/20 x 360° 4/20 x 360°
= 1440° / 20 = 1800° / 20 = 2160° / 20 = 360° / 20 = 1440° / 20 360°
= 72° = 90° = 108° = 18° = 72°
Step 4 → Draw the pie chart.

a) Draw a circle using compasses.

b) Then use your protractor to measure the degrees of each sector/section.
c) Finish up by coloring each sector and giving it a label like "Comedy: 4
(20%)", etc.
d) Give the title of the pie chart.
Do Practice 1 - 4 in
PDF files on GC.

The formula to find percentage (%) from the value of each data/item:

The formula to find the degree of the angle from the value of each
data/item:
To convert this into pie chart percentage, we apply the formula:
(Value of Item / Total Value) × 100%

4
10 Amount spent on rides= (10/20)× 100% = 50%
Amount spent on toffees= (4/20)× 100% = 20%
Amount spent on popcorn= (2/20)× 100% = 10%
Amount spent on ice-cream= (4/20)× 100% = 20%

Example: Observe the following pie chart that recommends a low-carb diet on a day.

To find the percentage, we divide each angle by

360° and multiply it by 100%.
(Angle of Item / 360° x 100%)

Protein =
(180°/360°) × 100% = (½) x 100% = 50%

Carb =
(108°/360°) × 100% = (3/10) x 100% = 30%

Fats =
(72°/360°) × 100% = (⅕) x 100% = 20%
A supermarket chain sold 3600 packets of sausages
YoUr TurN! last month.
The pie chart shows the different flavours.
Find the percentage of each sectors!
Package of Sausages Sold
Beef Vegetarian
= 150° / 360° x 100% = 90° / 360° x 100%
= 15/36 x 100% = 9/36 x 100%
= 5/12 x 100% = ¼ x 100%
= 500% / 12 = 25%
= 41.7%
Pork
Other = 40° / 360° x 100%
= 80° / 360° x 100% = 4/36 x 100%
= 8/36 x 100% = 1/9 x 100%
= 2/9 x 100% = 11.1%
= 200% / 9
= 22.2%
Go to the next stage →
A supermarket chain sold 3600 packets of sausages last month.

The pie chart shows the different flavours.

New Stage
a) How many packets of vegetarian sausages were sold?
b) How many packets of beef were sold?
Package of Sausages Sold
Formula → Degree of Item / 360° x Total packages

a) Vegetarian b) Beef
= 90°/ 360° x 3600 = 150° / 360° x 3600
= 9/36 x 3600 = 15/36 x 3600
= ¼ x 3600 = 5/12 x 3600
= 900 = 18 000 / 12
= 1500
So, 900 packets of vegetarian sausages and 1500
packets of beef sausages were sold.
