What’s New
Activity 1.1

Have you ever had a misunderstanding with a friend or a relative? Was there ever a
time that you or your message was misunderstood which resulted to a conflict? Or was it the
other way around? How often does this happen?

What you will do

Activity 1.1: Breaking Down Miscommunication

In your notebook, try to recall a major miscommunication or

misunderstanding that you were involved in and its consequences. Describe such
situation. In what component/s of the communication process do you think did the
problem originate? Explain what you did about it and give suggestions on how
problems as such can be avoided in the future.

The misunderstanding that I will never forget happened between me and my

mother. It was one of the most heartbreaking feeling that I’ve ever felt. There was one
time when my mom did something really bad and I tried to confront her with it. And the
thing is, she didn’t actually get my point for confronting her, I was totally shocked when
her answer was way far than the point that I’m trying to express. Our relationship were
not good as a result from that argument.

Many days had passed, I talked to her about it even though there’s a possibility
that she might not even care about it. All that I can say is that communication is the key for
miscommunication. Every problem needs to be talked about. One-sided stories shouldn’t be
practiced since it just make things worse.
What’s More
Enrichment

You just learned the essential components of communication and its different forms.

What you will do

Activity 1.3: Question and Answer

Instruction: Answer the questions briefly in your own words. Write your answers in a
separate sheet of paper.

1. How would a problem or difficulty in any of these components affect the

communication process as a whole?

A problem or difficulty in any of the components would greatly influence the

communication process as a whole. It is because a problem would possibly arise
because of a misunderstanding of the receiver, or even the speaker
himself/herself. And having a misunderstanding would affect the following
elements of communication, since the expected feedback was not the intended
one that could lead to confusion from both sides.

2. How does context (ex. environment, culture) influence your communication?

Consider the language and culture people you grew up with, and the role these
play in your communication styles.

Talking with different person in unalike environment affects my way of

speaking or communicating with them and with different types of topics. When I
talk to my parent at home, I talk like a baby wanting for some attention, while I’m
at school I could be jolly, serious, or gloomy, depending on the situation, and
when I go to a formal event, I would also be a different person wherein I am more
mature when talking to different individuals. It is because we need to know when
and how to communicate properly.
Activity 1.4: Differentiating the Forms of Communication

Instructions: Differentiate the forms of communication by completing the table below with an
example of an element in the communication process for each form of communication. The
sources for each are already given. Complete the table following the given answers.

Activity 1.4

What you will do

Before we proceed, read the situation below and answer the questions that follow on
a separate sheet of paper.

Activity 1.4: A World without Media

Imagine waking up one day to find no Internet, libraries, and cell phones.
Newspapers, magazines, radio stations and TV channels have also disappeared.
Basically, all communication tools have vanished.

1. How would you be informed of anything now?

It would be hard for us to be informed on what’s really happening on other places since
our only way of being educated is through what we see and based on what our neighbors
or family will say to us, which requires a face-to-face setting.

2. What ways would you have to communicate with one another?

Just like what I stated on the first number, I could communicate to the people who are
only close to me or to where I am, I can’t contact my friend who are far away since I can’t
talk to them face-to-face. But as an alternative, if it really needs to let them know, I can
send them a handwritten letter anytime.

3. How would you share information and communication news and events?

Every communication that would take place will be the same, just like in the previous
numbers, communicating would require face-to-face, which means we could just talk to
our nearby friends or just witness events by ourselves. Writing letters could also be an
option especially when a message needs to be delivered from a person that’s away.

4. What would happen with the decisions you usually make?

In this situation, I can’t promise if I would handle problems properly because I was
really used to ask people, especially stranger about my problems and where I am
confused with. With no internet or devices, I just need to solve them by myself. But in the
long run, it would be a great idea since I would be more independent.

5. How would it affect the way you live?

From being a person depending on communication tools, it would become a great

challenge for me. I’d always think if how my friends are by now, if they still have a
shoulder to cry on without me, or have they found another friend which they’d be close
with and they wouldn’t dare to talk to me anymore. But as time passes by, I realized that I
don’t need to depend on others, I need to focus on my priorities. And if my friends want to
see me, it’s either I go to their place or they’ll drop at my place. This would be a great
challenge to every friend.

6. What would you personally miss most in such a situation?

I would truly miss entertainment shows and different stories and videos from the
internet. It’s because they were already considered as my go-to whenever I feel down and
stressed with things. There may be other ways to change my mood, but life’s totally
different without them. Especially in social media, which gives every unnoticed talent a
spark that could lead them to different opportunities. And I would miss looking at my feed
that’s full of unforgettable memories and reminisce.

7. What would society lose in this situation?

The society would face an enormous challenge, and we don’t know if they’d face that
challenge or not. Lacking of communication tools would be hard for them to seek
information from different parts of the country because it would take a long time to travel
or even write a letter for different officials. The development wouldn’t be given that
attention because they don’t even know what problems occurred. And if there’s an
emergency, they couldn’t respond that quickly and it would definitely lead to the danger of
a lot of citizens.
