Collect at least five rock samples in your place and take a photo of the samples.
Describe the characteristics of each rock depending on their apperance, texture,
color, and layers(or bands). Then Classify them as to igneous, sedimentary, or
metamorphic rock.
DESCRIPTION: Pumice is a kind of volcanic rock with a very small grain size. In
terms of color, it ranges from a very light gray to a medium gray. There are many
empty gas bubbles in it, making it extremely light and sponge-like in appearance.
IMPORTANCE: The porous nature of chalk means that it can store a significant
amount of water. These rock types can act as a natural reservoir that slowly releases
water, which is a huge benefit in drought-prone areas.
TYPE OF ROCK: Metamorphic
IMPORTANCE: Marbles are used principally for buildings and monuments, interior
decoration, statuary, table tops, and novelties.
DESCRIPTION: Sandstones are made of sand grains that have been cemented
together. Like sandpaper, sandstones usually have a rough, granular texture, but to
really identify a sandstone you have to peer closely at its surface and look for
individual sand grains.
IMPORTANCE: Coal is a combustible rock and, along with oil and natural gas, it is
one of the three most important fossil fuels. Coal has a wide range of uses; the most
important use is for the generation of electricity.
