Overpopulation- A Huge Cause of Unsolved Global Challenges

“As for you, be fruitful and multiply; Populate the earth abundantly and
multiply in it.” - Genesis 9:7. This is one of the most famous bible verses that many
people use to reason out why they have to reproduce their own offspring without
being controlled. Human beings followed this concept until the world population
reached a number that the earth’s resources cannot support the number of humans
today. This massive problem is what we call “overpopulation.”How do we define
overpopulation, first and foremost? "The state of being crowded with overly great
numbers," according to the Oxford dictionary. That, however, isn't a complete
description of the condition. Any population where available resources are
insufficient to sustain the individuals will experience overpopulation. In overpopulated
ecosystems, food, water, and living space are in short supply (Philippine Statistics
Authority, n.d.)
Our country’s population is massively increasing. In 2018, the Philippines had
a population of 106,651,922 people, up 1,731,922 people from 2017. With a
population growth rate of 1.72 percent, the Philippines' population is expected to
reach 142 million by 2045. According to a 2015 survey, 21.6 percent of the Philippine
population lives below the national poverty threshold, implying that life for the
poorest of the poor, particularly those living in cities, will only get worse (Arranza,
2019). In terms of population, Pangasinan (2.43 million people) in Region I (Ilocos) was the
most populous among the country's 78 provinces. Cebu (2.38 million people), Bulacan (2.23
million people), Negros Occidental (2.14 million people), and Cavite (2.06 million people)
were the next most populous provinces. These were the provinces with populations exceeding
two million. 13 provinces in Luzon, five in Visayas, and three in Mindanao were among the
21 provinces with populations exceeding one million.
The problem in overpopulation has a negative impact in our environment.
Households were determined to be the primary contributors to air and water pollution
in the Philippines, according to the Environment and Natural Resource Accounting
Project (ENRAP) (The Effects of Overpopulation in the Philippines - PHDessay.Com,
2020). As the usage of fossil fuels has risen to maintain industrialized nations,
human population growth and climate change have gone hand in hand. Higher
population means more demand for oil, coal, gas, and other underground energy
sources that release carbon dioxide (CO 2) into the atmosphere when burned,
trapping warm air inside like a greenhouse. The developed world consumes the
majority of fossil fuels. It's a sobering concept that when most developing countries
experience economic growth, they aspire to similar industrial economies, further
increasing CO2 emissions into the environment.
Poverty and poor educational and health services are also some effects of
overpopulation. Close birth spacing, lower levels of nutrition intake, poor nutritional
status, higher infant mortality, smaller per capita health and food expenditures,
poorer access to preventive and curative medical care, lower schooling expenditures
per child, lower grades for children enrolled in school, and lower child intelligence are
all effects of population growth. It was also mentioned that this set-up is more
prevalent in families living in poverty. The comparatively high fertility rate has also
been shown to have an impact on education (The Effects of Overpopulation in the
Philippines - PHDessay.Com, 2020).
Based on the facts presented in this paper, we can conclude that
overpopulation is a serious problem that requires attention. One of the most pressing
issues that humanity faces today is overpopulation. The overpopulation of humans
on the earth has an impact on our planet's health and well-being. Overpopulation
impacts us all because food shortage rises, pollution rises, and global warming
worsens. With an ever-increasing number of people putting a strain on the planet's
already limited resources, population growth must be slowed.
Since we already know the effects of overpopulation, people must be
persuaded to help in solving this serious problem. We can do this by educating the
people. If citizens will have knowledge regarding this issue, their behavior towards
sex and reproduction will possibly changed. Second, government shall improvised
the existing laws to stop overpopulation such as the Republic Act 6365, otherwise
known as the “Population Act of 1971.” Lastly, we should make people aware of
family planning. Because the world's population is rapidly increasing, promoting
public knowledge about family planning and informing people about the dire
consequences of overpopulation can assist to slow population increase.
