A Backilling

LPG Lines, gas lines and oil well flowlines in trenches shall have a SAES-L-450
A1
minimum cover of 900mm, all others shall have 600mm. Sec. 14.6.3

The top of the pipe, in trenches, shall not be closer to finished grade than SAES-L-450
A2
half the total cover required in sand areas. Sec. 14.8.1

The top of the pipe shall be 100mm below finished grade in Sabkha SAES-L-450
A3
areas. Sec. 14.10.2

The top of pipe shall be 50mm below original grade in rippable rock or SAES-L-450
A4
hard marl areas. Sec. 14.9.3a

The top of pipe shall be 150mm from the top of finished grade in hard
SAES-L-450
A5 rock areas when the rock layer is closer to finished grade by half a pipe
Sec. 14.9.3a
diameter plus 150mm.

Spot backfilling shall be used to restrain the pipe after it has been SAES-L-450
A6
lowered into the trench. Sec. 14.6.1

SAES-L-450
A7 Any voids underneath the pipe shall be carefully backfilled.
Sec. 14.5

Spot backfilling shall have full specified cover and shall cover all
SAES-L-450
A8 preformed bends a distance of 6m to each side of the center of the
Sec. 14.6.1
bends.
The maximum clear distance between spot backfills shall be as shown
SAES-L-450
A9 on IFC Drawings; Spot backfills shall cover at least 4.5m of the pipe
Sec. 14.6.1
lowered into the trench.
Fills and cuts shall be made to reduce the number and/or magnitude of
SAES-L-450
A10 overbends and sagbends in the pipeline. Fills should be avoided in
Sec. 7.1.3
areas where the natural drainage of the surrounding area is affected.

Surveying sticks shall be used to check the depth of cover and centering SAES-L-450
A11
of the pipe. Sec. 14.9.3d

Sand cover shall be at least 200mm thick around and above the pipe; SAES-L-450
A12
The sand pile above this shall be shaped to its natural angle of repose. Sec. 14.9.3e

Provisions shall be made to prevent wash-out of the pipeline cover by

SAES-L-450
A13 rain storms if the pipeline construction changes the natural drainage

pattern.
In active sand dune areas, the backfill shall be stabilized with marl of
SAES-L-450
A18 152mm minimum depth, other stable material, or weathered crude oil
Sec. 14.8.5
with a minimum of 13mm penetration.
Where the line passes through a sand dune, the width of leveled,
SAES-L-450
A19 stabilized right-of-way shall be 3m on each side of the pipeline plus 1m
Sec. 14.8.5
for every 1m of dune height in both the "cut" and "fill" areas.
