EMT 2404 DESIGN OF MECHATRONIC SYSTEMS I

DATE: JUNE 2015 TIME: 2 HOURS

INSTRUCTIONS
1. This paper contains FOUR questions.
2. Question 1 (ONE) is COMPULSORY.
3. Answer Question 1 and any other TWO questions.

QUESTION 1 - COMPULSORY (30 Marks)

(a) Briefly explain the following mechatronic key elements.

(i) Mechanical systems
(ii) Electrical systems
(5 Marks)
(b) (i) Clearly explain the difference between the mechatronic approach and the
traditional multidisciplinary approach to design. What is the major weakness of the
traditional multidisciplinary approach?
(ii) Compare in details the traditional and the mechatronic approach to manufacturing
in a machine tool setup.
(11 Marks)
(c) Explain any five function played by mechanisms. How has the development of in
mechatronics reduced/improved each of the five functions?
(10 Marks)
(d) The hydraulic cylinder is an example of a linear actuator. A hydraulic Cylinder is used
to move a workpiece in a manufacturing operation through a distance 300 mm in 12
seconds, using a force of 60 kN. Find the required working pressure and the hydraulic
liquid flow rate if the cylinder has a diameter of 150 mm.
(4 Marks)

QUESTION 2 (20 Marks)

(a) Briefly explain the following processes.

(i) Extrusion
(ii) Electron beam machining
(iii) Additive manufacturing
(6 Marks)
(b) With the aid of a clear sketch, explain the steps followed in laminated object
manufacturing.
(6 Marks)
(c) A major consideration in the manufacture of sensors is to make them as small as
possible. Give three reasons why this consideration is necessary. What technology has
enabled microsensors to be manufactured at low cost?
(4 Marks)
(d) Give four differences between the traditional and mechatronic approaches to
manufacturing in chemical processes.
(4 Marks)

QUESTION 3 (20 Marks)

(a) (i) Explain three benefits of CNC machine tools.

(ii) Compare 3-axis and 5-axis CNC machining.
(6 Marks)
(b) (i) CNC has touched almost every facet of manufacturing. Explain the relevance of
this statement with regard to laser cutting.
(ii) What do you understand by a laser microjet?
(4 Marks)
(c) (i) Explain three basic categories of motion systems found in CNCs.
(ii) Identify the sources of static and dynamic loads in CNC units.
(5 Marks)
(d) Explain five typical errors in CNC machine tools.

the technical factors you need to consider when designing;
(i) the structural housing unit.
(ii) the loading characteristics.
