CARE OF MAGICAL CREATURES

(COMC) 27TH TERM LESSON 2

Phoenix
Physical Appearance
"The phoenix is a magnificent, swan-
sized, scarlet bird with a long golden tail, beak
and talons." As quoted from Newt Scamander
in his book, Fantastic Beasts and Where to
Find Them.
In addition to this is that it has red and
gold plumage (also known as feathers), and
also has black eyes. Their feathers glow faintly
in the dark, and their tails are hot to the touch.

M.O.M Classification - XXXX

This creature is classified by the

Ministry of Magic as a Beast: XXXX. And it
is native to countries like Egypt, India, and
China. Also, this creature can be related to
magical creatures like the Hoo-Hoo, and the
Thunderbird. The Hoo-hoo is also a firebird
Native in Japan.
"The phoenix gains an XXXX
rating not because it is aggressive, but
because very few wizards have ever
succeeded in domesticating it." These
creatures are not easy to domesticate.
It is said that there are only two
known domesticated phoenixes
namely Fawkes and Sparky.
While for Sparky not much is known about him, but this is the phoenix
mascot of the New Zealand Quidditch Team, Moutohora Macaws and not much
information is given.
Phoenixes that had been domesticated were extremely loyal to their owners,
and would depart to find their own paths if their owners died, rather than finding a
new master.
We can see how Fawkes is to Harry, although Dumbledore is his owner,
along the story, we can see that Fawkes somehow helps Harry whenever he needed
it. So, one does not need to be an owner of a phoenix in order to be helped by it.
Even those who are close to the owner can be sensed by the phoenixes.

Abilities

Immortality
The first characteristic is the immortality of a phoenix. It is then connected
with the so-called Burning Day.
Burning Day was the name of the day in
which a Phoenix bursted into flame and was reborn
from the ashes. A Phoenix at this stage of its life was
described as "decrepit-looking" and resembling "a
half-plucked turkey". After bursting into flame, the
Phoenix emerged from its own ashes as a newborn,
which Harry Potter regarded as "quite as ugly as the
old one".
In this day, they look as if their feathers are
falling. During this time, they regenerate themselves
after bursting into flames and becomes ashes. After a
few moments, they will rise again from the ashes as
a chick. But there are no records as to how they
reproduce, we can assume that somehow, it is like how birds reproduce. That is
how their life cycle is, since they are deemed to be immortal.
Healing Tears
Next is their healing ability, with the use of their tears. Their tears had potent
healing capabilities. For instance, phoenix tears were the only known antidote to
basilisk venom. Also, it is known that their tears were also able to bring a person
back even from the brink of death.

Immense Strength
A phoenix can lift up to four (4) people holding their tails. It was stated that
their tails are hot to the touch, but there is an exception, because they can control
the temperature of their body.

Apparate or Disapparate
One more ability is the ability to disappear and reappear at will. Technically,
they can teleport from one place to another. Phoenixes are also known to deliver
messages just like owls do, but as they disappear, they leave a single gold tail
feather on the spot they have disapparated with.

Phoenix Lament
Next is the Phoenix Lament or this is actually a song they sing. Its tunes are
known to touch the soul, in positive or negative ways. Its most powerful
performances are known to be present when the Phoenix suffers emotional
instability or distress, such as the death of its master. This song was reputed to
increase the courage of the pure of heart, and to strike fear into the hearts of the
impure. They give courage to those pure of heart once this is heard. While it strikes
fear to those who are impure.

Known untamed Phoenix

One undomesticated phoenix can be found in the Nurmengard scene in the
Fantastic Beasts movie. It is seen to be aggressive, giving off fire in his entire
body. And it can harm others if not properly controlled.

Phoenix Egg
There are known phoenix eggs in the Wizarding
World, although not enough sources can support as to
how they are produced. A phoenix egg was the egg from
which a phoenix was hatched. Phoenix eggs were glossy
green or blue in color. They do not need incubation in
order to hatch; however, it sometimes took several years
for one to hatch. Just like a full-grown phoenix, these
eggs can also control their temperature, thus the different duration of their hatching
process.

Phoenix Feather
Phoenix feather was one of the three
supreme core types. It was one of the rarest
cores, with the greatest power range and whose
allegiance is hard won. These are used in making
wands. And the known wands with this kind of core are the wands of Harry and
Voldemort.

Questions and Answers:

1. I haven't read the HP in books and hindi pa ako nakapanood ng Fantastic
Beasts. But may I ask if these Phoenixes are endangered in the wizarding
world?
 Rarely lang sila nakikita, pero wala akong nabasa na endangered na ba
sila or what since marami ding wild and untamed phoenixes sa
Wizarding World...
2. Are all phoenixes scarlet red in color?
 Yes po, yan po color nila talaga...
3. Prof, if this is the case, do they have the power to control the temp of their
tails since Dumbledore and Harry was able to touch fawkes?
 Yes, one of their abilities ay yung pag control sa temperature nila
because we can see sa movies na may times na nahahawakan sila ng
mga tao, but not all the time eh hindi mainit pag hinawakan sila...
4. How different is a scarlet red from a crimson red? kasi si Fawkes is crimson
red, based on what I've read
 Scarlet Red is brighter in color compared to Crimson Red... And in
the case of the phoenix, medyo nagbleblend yung gradient of colors so
somehow napagpapalit yung mga colors nay an, since medyo
magkalapit lang naman sila ng shade...
5. Ma'am? The gold tail feather... Is that kind of a mark just in case they want
to teleport back?
 Kapag may dinedeliver po silang message, may naiiwan na isang
golden feather kung saan sila nanggaling, as a mark kumbaga na may
phoenix na nanggaling dun...
6. Prof, phoenix related question but about the creature thought. It is believed
that a phoenix would appear to anyone in the Dumbledore family in need, so
technically is Credence Barebone a Dumbledore?
 Yes po, it is known na malapit or dikit ang mga phoenix sa mga
Dumbledores... And kung makikita niyo sa Crimes of Grindelwald,
yung sa last scene na nasa Nurmengard sila if I'm not mistaken, may
makikita kang phoenix sa bandang likod ni Credence, and I do believe
na si Fawkes din yun... And it was known na si Credence Barebone ay
si Aurelius Dumbledore...
7. Ma'am? The Phoenix feather used as Voldemort's and Harry's wand cores, is
it possible that it was plucked out by force? Because I think it's impossible
for a wild/untamed Phoenix to just give a special feather. It's also impossible
that the feather used came from a Phoenix that is on its Burning day because
the quality won't be that good.
 I can say na those feathers na ginamit sa wands ay possible na nakuha
sa mga phoenixes na tamed, like Fawkes... Yes, it could be possible
na kinuha siya by force, since impossible nga na makakuha ka nito sa
mga untamed or wild phoenixes... And ang alam ko talaga, galing kay
Fawkes mismo yung nasa wands nila Harry at Voldemort... I also see
the possibility na di ba may naiiwang gold feather kapag nag
disapparate yung phoenix, so pwedeng dun din nila nakukuha yun...
