Title of the Course: INTRODUCTION TO PLANT PATHOGENS

Credit Hours: 3(2-1)


Prerequisites: Biology (Higher Secondary level)
Learning Objectives: To acquaint students with basic concepts and
identification of plant pathogens

Instructor: Dr. Syeda Amber Kazmi


Course Contents:

Introduction; What is plant disease? Abiotic & Biotic Stresses of


Plants, Major Plant Disease Causing Organism & impact on
agriculture and human life , Basic areas of Plant Pathology study
and concept of disease triangle,Fungi & their economic
importance, General Morphology of Fungi ( hyphae, mycelium,
reproduction, nutrition etc.),Fungal like Organisms (FLOs): Life
Cycle of Fungi, Lower Fungi ( Chytridiomycetes & Zygomycetes) as
Plant Pathogens, Higher Fungi (Ascomycetes & Basidiomycetes) as
Plant Pathogens) Identification of plant pathogens including fungi,
prokaryotes, viruses, viroids, nematodes, fungus like organisms,
taxonomic position of economically important plant pathogens.

Practical

Orientation of laboratory equipments; sterilization of glassware,


preparation of media and isolation of different plant pathogens;
study of characteristics of various plant pathogens through slides,
live specimens and their comparative account/study
