Statement Of Purpose

Hrishikesh Vishwanath Sankhe

"When I see it, I know it," a medical practitioner once cryptically observed about the
start and spread of disease and epidemics in the rural areas of - my country - India.
Though India was committed to achieve “Health for All” by the year 2000, the range and
complexities of health issues have been many. On the one hand the government has
been struggling to combat communicable ailments like Typhoid, Tuberculosis, AIDS,
Polio and Hepatitis while on the other, it has to cope with non-communicable diseases
like diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular diseases and many more. The problems of health
and hygiene are many and a community-based approach is necessary. The main
constraints are the shortage of funds and the problem of deployment of medical
personnel to rural areas. The active participation of government agencies, families,
health care purchasers and providers, academic and research professionals, and others
at the national, state and local levels will take India many steps closer to its target of
“Health for All.”

My inspiration to work towards my objectives comes from influences in my early years,

which were nurtured by education and experience. Several community service projects
like mass immunization, diabetes check up camps, cataract operations, AIDS awareness
program, de-addiction of drugs and alcohol projects as well as blood donation drives
exposed me to the realities of the conditions existent in India. The poor health of the
people coupled with lack of education and an absence of adequate medical aid and
facilities set many questions racing through my mind. These experiences left an
enduring image of human suffering in my mind and strengthened my conviction to study
health management.

Through my years at Pharmacy College, I got involved in many community service

programs, which contributed towards shaping my personality and guiding me to my
goal, were the Integrated Practice in Immunization and Newer Vaccines, the National
Pulse Polio Immunization Program. I have spent all my spare time, my weekends, my
holidays and even my vacations visiting different Primary Health Centers and
Community Health Centers in and around Surat, treating patients for cough, fever and
diarrhea. I got involved in a health education program related to increasing the
awareness for women in the tribal and rural areas of a remote village called Dharampur,
India in the backward districts of Gujarat. Moved by the sad plight of my country and its
people, I decided to further my knowledge and understanding of Health management
and contribute towards the cause of Community Health.
My academic efforts here in India are proof of the determination and zeal with which I
commit myself to be expertise pharmaceutical. My schooling (10 th) was from
Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education in the year 2006
and (12th) was from the same board in the year 2008. A perfectionist by nature, I have
never shirked hard work. My quest for knowledge has always pushed me into putting in
my best efforts. This is amply proved by my performance all through middle school and
senior school where I stood first, year after year. I completed tenth grade (SSS grade
10) with 62% marks. With my inclination towards science, the decision to pursue the
field of Medicine came easy. With hard work and dedication, I kept up my exemplary
record and secured 53.83% in the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC grade 12) exam.
My excellent academic record secured my admission in B.Pharm in the UNIVERSITY OF
MUMBAI. Those four years at medical college have tremendously widened my scope
and understanding of the subject.

Education is an on-going process and the scope of the masters program in Health
management, intrigues me. Epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, clinical
trials, research study design, health policy and management, social and behavioral
science, research ethics, and scientific communication are but some aspects that would
equip me to face the challenges I have chosen. Health is by no means solely a medical
notion, but predominantly a societal one. Health management practice embraces all
those actions that are directed to the assessment of health and disease problems in the
population; the formulation of policies dealing with such problems; and the assurance of
environmental, behavioral, and medical services designed to accelerate favorable health
trends and reduce the unfavorable. Having found a career that would continually
challenge and motivate me to improve, I would like to direct my actions towards helping
a large number of people to emphasize prevention and primary care over tertiary care.
True success, according to me, lies in treating the population and not just an individual

As a culmination of my learning experiences, I chose now to pursue a Pharmaceutical

program at your university.

Sincerely yours
Hrishikesh Vishwanath Sankhe
