Statement of Purpose
"When I see it, I know it," a medical practitioner once cryptically observed about the
start and spread of disease and epidemics in the rural areas of - my country - India.
Though India was committed to achieve “Health for All” by the year 2000, the range and
complexities of health issues have been many. On the one hand the government has
been struggling to combat communicable ailments like Typhoid, Tuberculosis, AIDS,
Polio and Hepatitis while on the other, it has to cope with non-communicable diseases
like diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular diseases and many more. The problems of health
and hygiene are many and a community-based approach is necessary. The main
constraints are the shortage of funds and the problem of deployment of medical
personnel to rural areas. The active participation of government agencies, families,
health care purchasers and providers, academic and research professionals, and others
at the national, state and local levels will take India many steps closer to its target of
“Health for All.”
Education is an on-going process and the scope of the masters program in Health
management, intrigues me. Epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, clinical
trials, research study design, health policy and management, social and behavioral
science, research ethics, and scientific communication are but some aspects that would
equip me to face the challenges I have chosen. Health is by no means solely a medical
notion, but predominantly a societal one. Health management practice embraces all
those actions that are directed to the assessment of health and disease problems in the
population; the formulation of policies dealing with such problems; and the assurance of
environmental, behavioral, and medical services designed to accelerate favorable health
trends and reduce the unfavorable. Having found a career that would continually
challenge and motivate me to improve, I would like to direct my actions towards helping
a large number of people to emphasize prevention and primary care over tertiary care.
True success, according to me, lies in treating the population and not just an individual
Sincerely yours
