Introduction to Computing 05 Activity 2
Differentiate the types of system software programs.
The System Software is a general-purpose software while the Application Software is specific purpose software. System Software is written in a low-level language like a machine or assembly language but Application software is a high-level language is used to write Application Software
What are the functions of an operating system?
Managing resources Providing user interface Running applications
What are the features of an operating system?
Icons, Pointer, Windows, Tabs, Help, Menus, Dialog boxes, Gesture Control
Differentiate the categories of operating systems.
Embedded operating systems these are operating systems that are entirely stored within a device while Stand-alone operating systems also called a desktop operating system, control a single desktop or laptop computer and Network operating systems (NOS) are used to control and coordinate computers that are networked or linked together.
What are the examples of desktop operating systems?
Windows, Mac OS, Unix and Linux.
Is it possible to install multiple operating systems on a single
pc? Yes
What are the possible ways of installing multiple operating
systems on a single pc? Multi-boot Virtualization
What are desktop operating systems?
These are intended for use in a small office or home office with a limited number of users. These run single-user applications and share files and folders on a small network. Every personal computer has an operating system controlling its operations. The most widely used desktop operating systems are Windows, Mac OS, UNIX, and Linux. What are the examples of desktop operating systems? Windows, Mac OS, Unix and Linux
What are the ways to install multiple operating systems on a
single desktop computer? Multi-boot Virtualization
What are the examples of mobile operating systems?
Windows Phone, Android, iOS
Compare mobile operating systems and desktop operating systems.
The difference between a mobile operating system (OS) and a computer OS has to do with how individual tech companies have rolled out various versions of the operating systems that supply the fundamental environments for traditional software applications as well as new mobile apps
What are the examples of mobile operating systems?
Windows Phone, Android, iOS
Compare the different mobile operating systems.
Android is based on the Linux operating system. It is an open-source OS, which means developers are given access to unlocked hardware to develop new programs and iOS is based on Mac OS and is used as the platform for Apple’s iPad and iPhone. This OS is distributed exclusively for Apple hardware. And Windows phone is known for its user interface based on Metro (a designed language created by Microsoft, which aims to remove extra decoration and allow users to interact directly with content). The home screen is made entirely of Live Tiles, which are links.
What are utility programs?
These are specialized programs designed to make computing easier. These programs assist with a wide range of system maintenance and security functions, such as checking storage disks for errors, blocking security and privacy threats, and backing up important files. There are hundreds of different utility programs available; some are built into the operating systems, and there are utility programs that can purchase, such as Antivirus programs.
What are the examples of utility programs?
Disk Defragmenter, Windows Memory Diagnostic, Disk Cleanup, System Configuration, Task Manager When to use a utility program? Utility programs are applications included in system software that perform special functions such as managing system resources and improving efficiency. Some utility programs come built into the Windows or Mac operating systems; others you can purchase off the shelf.
