What I Need to Know
At the end of this module, you should be able to:
Derive inductively the relations among chords, arcs, central angles and
inscribed angles (M10GE-IIc-1).
What’s In
Describe the following terms related to a circle.
2. diameter
3. chord
4. semicircle
5. minor arc
6. major arc
7. central angle
8. inscribed angle

What’s New
What would our lives be like without shapes particularly circles? Have you
ever imagined life without circles? Can you picture out our ball games using balls
with shapes of square? How can our vehicle travel if tires are squares or rectangles?
Circles, no doubt, are playing a huge part in our day-to-day lives. Circles are
interesting. Unlike other shapes, these do not contain edges, but form arcs and
angles. Circles are a set of all points equidistant from a given point called center and
are indicated by the symbol ⊙. Example ⊙P can be read as circle with center P.

Terms Related to Figure Discussion/ Explanation
Circle
Chord A chord is a line segment
which endpoints are on a given
A circle.
Example: line segment AC or
D ̅𝐴𝐶̅̅̅̅̅ is a chord of ⊙B.

Arcs Arc is a part of a
circumference of a circle. It is
named by its endpoints and
can be read clockwise or
counter-clockwise. The
A symbol for arc is .
C
Example:
D B
The curve from point D to
point A is an arc. Which can
be read as “arc DA or ”.
Other example of arcs in the
left figure are𝐴𝐶̅̅̅⏜,

What’s More
Activity 1. Name Me!
Instructions: Given the circle O below, write the term that applies to each
description. Find the answers on the box provided. Terms can be used more than once.
Answers for items 1 and 2 are already given. Continue with numbers 3-8.

2.∠𝐸𝑂𝑅̅̅̅ Let’s try Number 2. The vertex of the angle is
at the center of the circle and the sides contain
two radii of the circle, therefore, it is a central

_______2. 1 inscribed angle
_______3. at least 2 major arcs
_______4. at least 2 central angles
_______5. at least 2 chords
_______6. at least 2 radii _______7. at least 2 minor
arcs
_______8. At least 2 intercepted arc
What I Can Do
Activity 4. Challenge Yourself!
Perform the following activities below.
a. Draw 3 objects that you know where chords, central angles, arcs and
inscribed angles are present.
b. Formulate 2 situations that involve chords, central angles, arcs and
inscribed angles.
Assessment
In this activity, you need to define and give example/s of the following terms of
the circle. Use your own words in defining the terms of the circle.
