Permutation Formula
Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Mathematics Grade 10 Self-Learning Module on Permutation

Formula!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed, and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st-century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the self-learning module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this self-
learning module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing
them to manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and
assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the self-learning module.
For the Learner:

Welcome to the Mathematics 10 Self-Learning Module on Permutation

LESSON

During the quarantine period, you have decided to clean your room. You found
the following items:

watch laptop mobile phone shoes

book tablet bracelet shirt

Suppose you want to store each of these items in a box. There are 8 items to
be placed but you only have 3 boxes where only one thing can be placed in each box.
How many options do you have if you are going to choose 3 according to its
importance?

First Box Second Box Third Box

What will you place on the first, second, and third boxes? Why?

In this situation, suppose you choose to place your laptop in the first box,
your mobile phone in the second box, and your book in the third box. Aside from
these, what other arrangements can be formed? How can we compute all the possible
ways of placing these items?

We determine that there are three events here and each event is where an item
will be placed in an empty box. By the Fundamental Counting Principle, there are 8
8×7×6×5!
x 7 x 6 permutations. Observe that 8 x 7 x 6 can be expressed as which is
5!

8!
equal to .
5!
What does 8 and 5 represent? Eight represents the number of items you
choose from while 5 represents the remaining items that were not chosen. This can
be denoted in permutation notation as;

𝑛!
nPr = (𝑛−𝑟)! where n and r are positive integers and 1 ≤ r ≤ n.

nPr is read as “Permutation of n objects taken r at a time”.

Other notations are:

𝑛
P(n,r), and 𝑃 ( )
𝑟
From our given example, if we use the Permutation formula, nPr, to determine
the number of possible ways of storing 8 things, n = 8, and 3 items at a time in 3
boxes, r = 3, then it will be,

8! 8! 8×7×6×5!
8P3 = (8−3)! = = = 8 × 7 × 6 = 336 ways
5! 5!

Examples:

1. Evaluate the following Permutations.

12
A. 6 P6 B. P(10,4) C. 𝑃 ( )
5
Solutions:
6! 6!
A. 6P6 = (6−6)!
= 0!

6𝑥5𝑥4𝑥3𝑥2𝑥1
= 1

= 720
10! 10!
B. P(10,4) =
(10−4)!
= 6!

10𝑥9𝑥8𝑥7𝑥6!
= 6!

= 10 𝑥 9 𝑥 8 𝑥 7

= 5,040

12 12! 12!
C. 𝑃 ( )= = 7!
5 ( 12−5 ) !

12𝑥11𝑥10𝑥9𝑥8𝑥7!
= 7!

= 12 𝑥 11 𝑥 10 𝑥 9 𝑥 8

= 95,040
2. Find the unknown variable.

A. 9Pr = 504

B. P(n, 3) = 990

Solutions:

A. 9Pr = 504 B. P(n, 3) = 990

9! 𝑛!
(9−𝑟)!
= 504 (𝑛−3)!
= 990

362,880 𝑛(𝑛−1)(𝑛−2)(𝑛−3)!
(9−𝑟)!
= 504 (𝑛−3)!
= 990

362,880
= (9 − 𝑟)! 𝑛(𝑛 − 1)(𝑛 − 2) = 990
504

720 = (9 – r)! 𝑛(𝑛 − 1)(𝑛 − 2) = 11 𝑥 10 𝑥 9

6! = (9 – r)! n = 11

6 =9–r

6–9= –r

–3= –r

3=r

3. Solve the following problems.

A. In how many ways can the letters of the word COVID be arranged if all letters
are used?

Solutions:

5! 5! 5𝑥4𝑥3𝑥2𝑥1
5 P5 = (5−5)! = = = 120 ways
0! 1

B. How many different ways can the 6 Grab Food motorcycles be parked if there
are 8 available parking spaces?

Solutions:
8 8! 8! 8𝑥7𝑥6𝑥5𝑥4𝑥3𝑥2!
𝑃( ) = = = = 20,160 ways
6 (8−6)! 2! 2!

In solving problems of permutation, it is easier if you use formula. In real life
we also need a formula to succeed. You, as a student, what is your formula to be
successful in the future?
