A. Grammar Notes

MODAL VERBS + HAVE + PAST PARTICIPLE


1. Examples of modal verbs are could, have, would, have and should have.
2. These past tense modals are useful for expressing your present feelings about
a past decision (or other actions).
3. They are sometimes called modals of lost opportunities.
- I would have donated to the charity, but I was not convinced about the
cause.
- He should have told the truth about what he had seen.
- She could have won any tennis match she played.
4. We use must have to express speculative possibility. It tells us that one
scenario appears to be the most likely one.
- My passport is missing, I must have left it in the hotel.
- Mariam has not replied. She must have forgotten.

B. Underline the correct words.
