General Instructions. Read the following instructions carefully.
a) There are 17 questions in this question paper. All questions are compulsory.
b) Section B: Q. No. 1 to 9 are short answer questions and carry 2 marks each.
c) Section C: Q. No. 10 to 14 are short answer questions and carry 3 markseach.
d) Section D: Q. No. 15 to 17 are long answer questions carrying 5 marks each.
e) There is no overall choice. However, internal choices have been provided.
f) Use of calculators and log tables is not permitted.

SECTION B

The following questions, Q.No 1- 9 are short answer type and carry 2 marks each.

1. Pressure is determined as force per unit area of the surface . The SI unit of pressure ,
pascal, is 1 Pa = 1 N /m2
If mass of air at sea level is 1034g /cm2, calculate the pressure in pascal
OR
Calculate the molarity of a solution of ethanol of water in which the mole fraction of
ethanol is 0.040.

2. Calculate the no of atoms in each of the following


(i) 52 moles of He (ii) 52 u of He
(iii)52 g of He (iv ) 23 g of Na

3. Give the number of electrons in the species H2+ , H2 , H2- and O2+

4. Using s, p, d notations, describe the orbital with the following quantum numbers.
(a) n=1, l=0; (b) n = 3; l=1 (c) n = 4; l =2; (d) n=4; l=3.

5. Which element do you think would have been named by


(i) Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory
(ii) Seaborg’s group?

6. Which of the following pairs of elements would have a more negative electron gain
enthalpy?
(i) O or F (ii) F or Cl

7. Explain why BeH2 molecule has a zero dipole moment although the Be–H bonds

are polar.
8. What do you understand by bond pairs and lone pairs of electrons? Illustrate by
giving one example of each type.

9. Assign oxidation number to the underlined elements in each of the following


species:
(a) NaH2PO4 (b) NaHSO4
(c) H4P2O7 (d) K2MnO4

SECTION - C

Q.No 10 -14 are Short Answer Type II carrying 3 mark each.

10. Chlorine is prepared in the laboratory by treating manganese dioxide (MnO2) with
aqueous hydrochloric acid according to the reaction

4HCl (aq) + MnO2(s) → 2H2O (l) + MnCl2(aq) + Cl2 (g)

How many grams of HCl react with 5.0 g of manganese dioxide?

11. (i) Write the electronic configurations of the following ions:


(a) H- (b) Na+ (c) O2–(d) F–
(ii) What are the atomic numbers of elements whose outermost electrons are
represented by
(a) 3s1 (b) 2p3 and (c) 3p5 ?

(iii) Which atoms are indicated by the following configurations ?


(a) [He] 2s1 (b) [Ne] 3s2 3p3 (c) [Ar] 4s23d1.

OR

Indicate the number of unpaired electrons in : (a) P, (b) Si, (c) Cr, (d) Fe and (e) Kr.

12. Explain why


(i) O has lower ∆i H than N and F?

13. Describe the hybridization in case of PCl5. Why are the axial bonds longer as
compared to equatorial bonds?

What is meant by the term bond order? Calculate the bond order of :
N2, O2, O2+andO2–
14. Identify the substance oxidised reduced, oxidising agent and reducing agent for
each of the following reactions:
(a) 2AgBr (s) + C6H6O2(aq) → 2Ag(s) + 2HBr (aq) + C6H4O2(aq)

(b) HCHO(l) + 2[Ag (NH3)2]+(aq) + 3OH–(aq) → 2Ag(s) + HCOO–(aq) + 4NH3(aq)+ 2H2O(l)


(c) HCHO (l) + 2Cu2+(aq) + 5OH–(aq) → Cu2O(s) + HCOO–(aq) + 3H2O(l)

SECTION D

Q.No 15 to 17 are long answer type carrying 5 marks each.

15. (a) Which of the following species, do not show disproportionation reaction and why ?

ClO–, ClO2–, ClO3– and ClO4–


Also write reaction for each of the species that disproportionate.

(b) Balance the following redox reactions by ion – electron method :


MnO4– (aq) + I–(aq) → MnO2(s) + I2(s) (in basic medium)

OR
(a)What are the oxidation number of the underlined elements in each of following;

(i)C3O2 (ii)Br3O8 (iii) S4O62–

(b) Balance the following redox reactions by ion – electron method :


Cr2O72– + SO2(g) → Cr3+(aq) + SO42–(aq) (in acidic solution)

16. (a) What is the total number of sigma and pi bonds in the following molecules?
(i) C2H2 (ii) C2H4

(b) Which hybrid orbitals are used by carbon atoms in the following molecules?
(i) CH3–CH3; (ii) CH3–CH=CH2 ; (iii) CH3-CH2-OH; (iv) CH3-CHO (v) CH3COOH

OR

(a) Compare the relative stability of the following species and indicate their magnetic properties;
O2 ,O2+,O2- (superoxide), O22−(peroxide)
(b) Distinguish between a sigma and a pi bond.

17. (a) Predict the formulas of the stable binary compounds that would be
formed by the combination of the following pairs of elements.
(i) Lithium and oxygen (ii) Magnesium and nitrogen
(iii) Aluminum and iodine (iv) Silicon and oxygen
(v) Phosphorus and fluorine (vi) Element 71 and fluorine

(b) In the modern periodic table, the period indicates the value of :
(i) atomic number (ii) atomic mass
(iii) principal quantum number (iv) azimuthal quantum number.

OR

(a) Write the general outer electronic configuration of s-, p-, d- and f- block elements.
(b) The increasing order of reactivity among group 1 elements is Li < Na < K < Rb <Cs
whereas that among group 17 elements is F > CI > Br > I. Explain.
