Clothing
Clothes or clothing are the collective terms used to describe the different types of
materials worn on the body.

Basic functions of clothing


 Protection
Clothing insulates from the cold and keeps the sun from burning and
dehydrating the body in the heat.
 Identification
Can identify you as a member of a group or organization.
 Modesty
A belief about the proper way to cover the body with clothes. Varies with
different times in history.
 Status
Can show a persons ststus or rank within a community.
 Adornment
something worn to enhance one's appearance.

BASIC TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

Measuring Tools

 Measure Tape
A flexible measuring device used in taking body measurements.
 Sewing Gauges
Used for measurements at hem lines, buttonholes and areas where other
small measurements require checking.
 Rulers
Measuring 12 inches or even 18 inches, either clear or solid.
 yard stick
is used for making hemlines and checking grain lines when laying.
 L-square or tailor square
It is useful in constructing perpendicular lines with divisional parts located in
longer and shorter arms.
 French curve
This is used to shape the depth of the neck hole and armhole of the pattern.

Cutting Tools
 Benthandled shears
7 to 8 inches long scissors suitable for cutting fabric because the blades rest
flat on the cutting surface.
 Pinking shears
Cuts a zigzag edge and is used for finishing hem edges, seams, etc.
Cutting Scissors
 Trimming scissors
6 inch long scissors used trimming and clipping seams and for general use.
 Embroidery scissors
Used for fine details in delicate fabrics and embroidery.
 Button hole scissors
It is intended for making buttonholes.
 Thread clippers
Used for snipping threads and not for fabric.
 Seam ripper
specifically designed for ripping out stitches from seams.
 Rotary Cutter and Mat
It is an adaptation of the giant rotary cutter used by the garment industry.

Marking Tools
 Chalk pencils
This Chalk pencil is used to make fine lines on fabric and it has an erasing
brush at one end.
 Liquid marking pen
Used on fabric that shows water mark.
 Tailors chalk
This is essential as marker for use on materials.
 Wax chalk
This is available in black or white and is used for woolen fabrics.
 Tracing wheel
serrated edge wheel produces dots on the fabric and is suitable for most
types of fabric.
 Dressmakers carbon ppaper
Used to transfer the Tracing wheel's markings to the fabric.

Pinning and Sewing tool


 Pin cushion
used to hold straight the needles and pins.
 Hand needle
Use in making temporary stitches and buttonholes.
 Sewing needle threader
Used as an aid in putting the thread to the needle.
 Thimble
A small pitted cup for protection on finger to push the needle.

Materials
 Fabric
It is the cloth used in making garments.
 Thread
Used in assembling or constructing the garments parts.
