Maya Bay, Thailand Closed Indefinitely

Introduction

Maya Bay is one of the most popular beach in the country of Thailand, it is located in the island of
Koh Phi Phi Leh which housed by 100-meter high cliffs on three sides. Aside from its picturesque view it
started to accommodate large number of visitors and became well-known after it is featured in the movie
titled “The Beach” starring the famous actor, Leonardo DiCaprio.
Maya bay has been closed for 4 months to allow it to recover from the impact of hordes of tourists.
But according to Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) of Thailand, 4
months is not enough for the rehabilitation. Due to its popularity, Maya Bay visitors are exceeding from
what the bay can accommodate. The most concern on the bay were the beach forest has been degraded and
tree roots are exposed due to excessive strolling, the beach is overcrowded, and the coral reefs are damaged.
DNP claims to be investigating ways to control tourist numbers amid concerns that visitors are destroying
the environment and marine tourism spots.

Case Analysis of Maya Bay

1. What were the numbers of visitor arrivals in Maya bay in comparison with its actual capacity?
- By being famous, Maya Bay receives as many as 4,000 tourists and 200 boats a day that is more
than the bay can accommodate. They also aim to change the management approach for the bay as
they hire universities to study the number of tourist and boats the bay can accommodate which is
roughly calculated at 2,000 tourists and 100 boats per day.
2. What are the available resources within the island?
- The available resources within the Island of Maya Bay are the Maya bay ecosystem and the beach’s
physical structure, Tourism of the bay itself, the beauty of the Maya Bay that attracts tourist, and the
Livelihood of the locals who make their living from tourist.

3. Discuss the levels of tourism development in Maya Bay

- After it became popular because of “The Beach
 Due to the effects of the massive flood of tourists, Thailand's government announced that
one of its most popular tourist destinations will be shuttered for four months.
 The tourist destination's closure is intended to help the area recover from its overcrowding.
 Thailand's Department of National Parks, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation (DNP) has
stated that a considerable longer time is needed to recover.
- Planned developments after its rehabilitation
 Its closure has been extended for several months. (Beginning in October)
 The implementation of the Coral Propagation.
 Study more about the recovery of the bay's ecosystem.
 Creating a plan on how will it be able to handle the impacts of tourism.
 The organization has planned for improved management of its strategy, particularly on
things that must be modified or changed, in order to attain sustainability.
 They have hired colleges to research the number of people and boats that the bay can
accommodate on a daily basis.
 Limitation of tourists and transport boats per day will be issued and put into practice
(depending on the results of the study).
4. What were the island’s standards in using its resources for tourism?
- The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation of Thailand raises its standard
in managing its resources by rehabilitating the island for the reason that the Maya Bay is heavily
overcrowded that causes pollution and devastation of nature. The government hired universities to
research Maya Bay's ecosystem, determine the time needed for recovery, and how they will control
the negative effects of tourism. The island changed its management and approach by only
accommodating tourist with the accordance to Maya Bay's capacity. Lastly, they performed coral
propagation to stave off coastal erosion, in that way they are able to safeguard the island from
damage, and reduce the risk of pollution.

5. Provide comments or suggestions regarding how the island’s resources should have been used.
- The management that taking care of the Maya Bay should have developed policies and guidelines
on how to protect the island's resources and make it sustainable.
- Increased safety and resilience of island community. The international community should continue
to support a range of disaster risk management measures to assist island states to reduce their levels
of vulnerability and risk.
- The management should have also protected the natural beauty or the natural state of the island.
- Restrict the number of tourists that could go to the bay and strictly control wastes and do eco-
friendly tourism. Strict law should be enforcing and locals should pay more attention to safe
environment than money from it.
- Big projects that can affect and destroy the natural state of the island should have not been
approved.
- Also limiting the number of boats to avoid traffics, pollution and the destruction of marine life
surrounding the bay. Making sure that boat drivers/captains know the value of the coral reefs to the
bay and to the environment. Educate them on how important coral reefs are, to avoid the destruction
of coral reefs because of their careless usage of anchors.
