Television does more harm than good for us. We think television educates us,
evoke our senses and help us find truth about everything, but beneath the
superficial layer lies fabulously wealthy tycoons who have the intension of
manipulating the corporate media for their selfish benefit. Therefore, the writer has
unplugged her TV twenty years ago. Although some programs are entertaining, she
finds it in her best interest not to watch TV. Being a curbsider, she sometimes feels
like an outsider as she is not updated with the mainstream culture. Watching TV
has made our lives passive. Instead of wasting our time in front of TV we could
read books, talk to people, watch the sunset or even travel. Why would you want to
live a vicarious life when you could experience it firsthand? TV delivers the
culture equivalent to junk food; as a result our political and social world remains
deficient. The delusional world of TV transports us to the different world of soap
opera, mythology, movies and metaphysical fantasy. The politically and
economically powerful people manipulate the mass media to mold public opinion
to serve their own interest. Hence your freedom is taken away from you. What
kind of culture can you expect from a child who has spent thirty percent of his life
walking in front of TV, exposed to thirteen thousand killing, hundred thousand
violent episode and six lakh fifth thousand commercials.
