Method Statement:

Step 1:- Surface Preparation-

 Ensure that the surface is free from dust, sharp, protrusions and hollows. There shall
not be any leakages or running water over the wall surface.
 Note: It is important that the thickness of guniting be at least 30-40 mm above the
welded wire mesh. The guniting mix shall contain good quality alkali free accelerator
to control rebound loss and obtain a cohesive mix. In addition, use 6mm length 3-6
denier, mono filament polypropylene fibres, to control cracking. The surface must be
finished smooth, to obtain good contact with HDPE membrane. The mix proportion
shall be 1:3 (cement : sand) .
 Cure the gunited area for 14 days before starting application of the HDPE membrane.

Step 2:- Application of HDPE Membrane-

 Apply the HDPE Membrane with plastic surface against the levelled substrate

 Mechanically fasten the membrane vertically using flat headed fixings appropriate to
the substrate.
 Secure the top of membrane using a batten or fixing 50 mm below the top edge of the
substrate.
 Use fixings at typically 600 mm centres or as per agreed site condition/ requirement
to secure the membrane flat against the substrate. Fixing can be made through selvage
using flat headed fasteners (dimensions to be given by the vendor), this allows firmly
rolled overlaps which is covered by subsequent strip of HDPE membrane.
 Overlap Procedure: Overlapping area is also defined as selvage. Overlap all roll and cut
edges by a minimum 100 mm. Ensure the underside of succeeding sheet is clean, dry
and free from contamination before attempting to overlap, wipe with damp cloth if
necessary.
 After drying, apply HDPE double sided tape on previous sheet along the 70-80 mm of
joint.
 Ensure that the continuous joint is achieved without creases.
 As described in the method statement for application of HDPE Membrane under the
Raft slab, membrane is taken to the vertical side to a minimum of 300 mm and up to
500 mm above the final raft concrete level and secured on the shuttering and
protected with temporary aluminium flashing.
 This membrane which is carried from the raft level shall be secured on the substrate.
Carry over the HDPE membrane from the vertical face of the retaining wall at least 100
mm over it. This overlap between retaining wall membrane and raft membrane should
be minimum 100 mm. Then secure both the membranes in place by using a single-
sided HDPE tape of the same membrane, 100 mm on both sides of the joint.
 Repair methodology: Small scratches can be repaired by using HDPE double sided tape
and punctures can be repaired with patch of same HDPE membrane exceeding
minimum 150 mm beyond the puncture with all edges of patch sealed with double
sided tape.
 Repair patches to be plotted on As Built drawing, for future reference.
 Commence the process of laying retaining wall, while doing compaction care must be
taken not to damage the membrane.
 Remove waler beam and inclined rock anchors stage wise, as the retaining wall is cast
in lifts. Waler beam and inclined rock anchors will affect the membrane.
 Note: It is advisable to provide half round gutters beneath the construction joints as
well as retaining wall and slab intersections all along the perimeter, as a secondary
