1. What is art? Why do we need to study art appreciation?

We all have different levels of understanding of art. However, we are all allowed to shape
form our opinion on the basis of free will, intuition and personal understanding. So for me,
art is meant to express something that we ourselves feel unable to express or convey.
Through its visual medium it evokes feelings of joy, sadness, anger and pain.

On the other hand we also need to study Art appreciation because It is a good way to
understand the history behind the work, and the period from which the piece originated.
Artists often reflect the problems that they face, and the issues of the society in their work. By
analyzing and putting ourselves in the mind of the artist, we can better study how differently
society functioned then, compared to now. We can empathize and relate to the problems they
faced on a personal level. Additionally It is important to foster art appreciation and analysis,
as it helps us value the art in how it appeals to us and what it means to each person. It delves
into the history and the story behind the art, as well as a look into the lives of the artists. It
enables one to critically analyze a work, along lines of design, mastery and techniques. Most
importantly, however, art appreciation stimulates though and analysis, provokes an
individual to look past what meets the eye and open our mind to the views of others. That is
why art appreciation is so important in bringing that one final element to complete the work,
and that is our interpretation. Our perspective brings the artwork to life as it changes for
every person around it.

2. Why do people create works of art?

A lot of people make art for a few reasons. In life, we experience so much fragmentation
of thought and feeling. Based on my point of view, creating art brings things back together.
Some artist, get inspired by what you see. Moreover, one reason also why people create art is,
because you want your art to make people think, to provoke action and make people talk
about your specific subject. It is possible you create art in order for people to be moved by it.
Aside from provoking in a negative way, giving joy, enriching lives and making people laugh
are also reasons to be motivated as an artist. Those two sides of provoking aren’t mutually
excluding. When you are able to portray the push and pull of life, it enriches your art. You
can use art to become a better person. Creating can be a form of therapy. A way to create flow
and escape time and reality as you can see, feel and touch it. You can feel transformed by it,
being able to withstand or overcome the troubles of life.
You can empower people with your art. Maybe because people feel supported or
because you inspire others. They feel strengthened within their specific situation. Perhaps
you are a social worker and use art as a means to enable people to run their own lives. Or you
feel teaching others your particular set of skills is part of your societal duty. Even if your art
isn’t meant for society as a whole, your art can inspire others to become artists themselves.
Inspire people to reach the goal of their dreams. Your art can make others be able to take
difficult decisions and change their lives for the better. Also, to give power, it can make
yourself feel good.

LESSON 2: Introduction of the Basic

make life fun. You can craft a game out of the most boring chores and tasks. Or you can think
up of stories to entertain you as you drift off to sleep or when you find yourself with nothing

you can use creativity as a job. Such jobs include writing, drawing, painting, music, and so
much more. Creative thinking can open all sorts of possibilities for fun, enriching, and
fulfilling living. As you will find new ways to live, and new ways to smile. To sum up
Creativity helps motivate you.

Most people might ignore the aspects of creativity and what it can offer. A lot of people
would rather go aimlessly through the day, and only use their mind enough just to do that.
They do not understand how a creative mind can benefit them and enrich their lives. But
applying creative thinking to your everyday life can make things so much more interesting.
With creativity you free your mind up to think in new and exciting ways. Creativity helps you

LESSON 3: Assumptions of art and

Art Appreciation: Creativity, Imagination, and Expression

Activity 1
Direction: Answer the following questions as precisely yet as thoroughly as possible. 5points
each
1. If you were an artist, what kind of artist would you be? Why?
There are many different kinds of artists, and each uses a different medium to express
themselves. So, if I were an artist I would to choose to be painter. Why? My reasons is I could
paint anything I wanted to. I am a type of a lady who has a very vivid imagination. I love
creating image in my mind that is far from reality. If I am a painter I will probably paint all
those images that my mind create. I love seeing colorful artworks painting that hanged up in
wall of different places. Aside from that, I wanted to be a painter to paint free to my closest
friend, I wanted also to preserved memories from our past by painting it. And lastly I can
help my parents financially If just that I talent as a painters.

2. Depend why is art not nature?

Art is not nature in light of the fact that from numerous points of view and together
with my complex reason, art is not natural, it is an artificial construct made by man and
woman. It was created by the imagination and creativity of a person who made one artwork.
In the event that art is nature, at that point everything is nature. So it sort of makes the word
nature redundant. In the event that nature is life and, at that point As for differences between
art and nature, it is well known that nature is original and art is only a creation by human
beings. Art tries to replicate things natural but nature will always remain supreme. There is
another difference between art and nature and it is the manner in which much deeper
meaning is conveyed by an artist on his canvas though he appears to mimic nature.
Some art imitates nature superbly, but the real purpose of art is to present the viewer with a
new way of perceiving nature, so that the work of art in front of them either takes their
breath away with it's beauty, strangeness, amazing vision, or sheer majesty, and/or intrigues
and shocks them into recognizing something they’ve never noticed or even thought about
before.

3. Examine why is art ageless and timelessness?

As we observe until now you can really appreciate the beauty of the art from the past
centuries. Until now in our generation art from decades are very high light and most
favorable artworks and we also asked the question why? And for my reason, art is timeless.
Along the lines of abstract art, one could consider the work of Van Gogh, Manet, Picasso,
Bacon, and Dalí. These artists are known for using techniques such as paint that are varied
and make the viewer think, which is the purpose of art. The purpose of art is to free the mind
of sense of time; if we judge art on the basis of how long it lasts, that would be hilarious. In
most of the cases, when people realize some art is truly timeless, they try very hard to
practice and preserve it which makes it timeless in the normal sense of that word. The

sense of that word. To sum it up, arts is not in time or age it is on the message that artist
wanted to convey and the memories tried to preserved.

4. Argue why does art involve experience?

We all that experiences bring huge impact to every task that we do, Experience affect the
whole parts of one product, that is why I am definitely agrees that art must involve
experiences. Thus, art expresses the experiences of an artist. These experiences are unique to
a person and it is something that presses an artist to produce art. create a sad poem/song
because he/she has this painful experience of love. It effectively communicate something you
do not even undergo. artistic renditions of self expression reflect your life and experience,
even if the works are fantasy and imagination; they draw upon imagery you have learn. It is
impossible to illustrate something your mind cannot formulate.

LESSON 4: Functions and
Philosophical Perspectives on Art

Activity 1
Direction: Answer the following questions as precisely yet as thoroughly as possible. 5pts each

1. What art form/ artwork have changed something in your life? Why?
The artwork that had changes something in my life is “The spoliaruim” made by Artist
Juan Luna. The first time I discovered about the history of this artworks I really got
motivated. The deepest meaning behind this painting was crucial. I just do realize that I'm
very lucky to live in my generation today which is we have freedom, and we never experience
being violated by someone. I just can’t imagine the life before, and even sometimes I’m really
struggling in my problem then this painting floated into my mind I got some strength to fight
again. People before survive from harass, their life is very complicated and difficult
compared to mine so means I have no rights to say my life is hard and I can’t succeed from it
knowing that I have some one who will help me and I am free.

2. Does art always have to be functional? Why? Support your response. Provide your example.
Absolutely yes!, according to what I’ve read in our modules an inquiry on the function of
art is an inquiry on what art is for, means people create arts with purpose and it’s has
different art forms come with distinctive functions. Art always have a function but they
cannot be assigned since the function of an art form depends on its context. Art does always
have a meaning, and the refusal to include a deeper meaning has a deeper meaning in itself.
For example, Juan Luna created “The Spoliaruim” because he wanted to convey some
message to people and sometimes they create art in order to made a remembrance from the
past events. Some people do art as their reliever in any problem that they encounter. To sums
all up All arts has meaning and purpose why they being created by their creators.

3. If an art work ceased to have a function, will it remain an art? Why?

My answer for this question would be definitely yes! Even artworks ceased to have a
function it still remains an art. Functional artworks, on the contrary are highly crafted
artistic creations that can perform utilitarian jobs, but that collector's might prefer to keep on
the display shelf. Art is usually about self-expression because artists have to feel strongly
enough about something to try and put it into a form that they, and others, can come to
terms with. This product of their self-expression can help others because there will always be
people who feel the same way but cannot express it themselves. there was a whole poetry
movement saying that poetry has to be nothing more than impressive by its beauty. For
example From an art historical perspective, you could say that functional art is the inverse of
Marcel Duchamp's famous ready made, where he transformed utilitarian objects—a urinal, a
bottle rack, etc.—into conceptual artworks by fiat: it became art because he said it was. Once
again art is always an arts.

Activity 2
Let’s make it happen
Direction: Look around your house and identify a product of art. In box below, paste a picture
of that product of art in your household. Trace the beginnings of this item and identify what
functions it has played in history e.g., a painting of the Last Supper in your dining room or a
spoon. 35pts
The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci

This artwork produced in 1495-1498 and is considered to be one of the famous artworks of
Renaissance art movement. The work can be viewed now at Convent of Santa Maria delle
Grazie, Milan. One of the most representative and analyzed masterpieces of the Renaissance
and has considered as one of the most controversial works of all time. It’s one of the most
recognizable pieces of art in history. This dining room mural depicts one of the most well-
known moments of the New Testament. It’s been the source of heated debates on religion,
history, art, and conspiracy theories. It’s narrowly avoided destruction time and time again
The painting was commissioned for refectory of the Convent of Santa Maria Delle Grazie by
Ludovico Sforza Il Moro, Duke of Milan and patron of artists. The Last Supper of Jesus and his
twelve disciples is a universal Gospel theme and the painting composition is extraordinary
since it does not reveal betrayal at first sight.

LESSON 5: Subject and Content

Activity 1
Let’s work on this Direction: Answer the following questions. 10 point each

1. What are the hurdles of accessing art in terms of its subjects and content?
When we talk about the hurdles in accessing art in terms of its subject and content is
that, art itself is very vague. Not all people who’s viewing art can understand easy what is the
artist trying portray. Art cannot be explained as easy as what others think. It has a deep
meaning in every art. Even the subject of the painting portrays a deep meaning as well as the
content on why it is considered as art. In terms of its subject and content is that, art is very
unpredictable. Art cannot be explained as easy as what others think. It has a deep meaning in
every art or it portrays a lot of meanings. In some circumstances people misunderstand the
message of artwork and ending up not wanting it.

2. Where do artist source their subjects?

I have this classmate before who is very artistic when it’s come to art, she has this kind
of broad imagination and creativity in doing her artwork . There I do realize artists can source
their subjects from nature, religious connections, and history. Artists can gain inspiration
from their personal stories, emotions/feelings, religious motifs, scenery and objects from
nature, significant others, significant events of history, and issues found in the society as
sources for their subjects.

3. Name an example of an artwork and speculate on the content of the artwork based on its
factual and conventional.

Futurism

Fairly unique among different types of art movements, it is an

Italian development in abstract art and literature, founded in
1909 by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, aiming to capture the
dynamism, speed and energy of the modern mechanical world.
Source: Top 25 Art Movements and Styles | Artland Magazine
As we look to the figure above I choose this image as an examples of factual meaning. From
the title itself and the how it’s look like we can easily understand what this artworks all about.
This pertains to the most rudimentary level of meaning for it may be extracted from the
identifiable or recognizable forms in the artwork and understanding how these elements
relate to one another.
Constructivism

Developed by the Russian avant-garde around 1915, constructivism is

a branch of abstract art, rejecting the idea of “art for art’s sake” in
favour of art as a practice directed towards social purposes. The
movement’s work was mostly geometric and accurately composed,
sometimes through mathematics and measuring tools.
Source: Top 25 Art Movements and Styles | Artland Magazine
For this artworks it’s an example of Conventional meaning, pertain to the acknowledge
interpretation of the artwork using motifs, signs, symbols and other cyphers as bases of its
meaning. The example of an artwork and speculate on the content of the artwork based on its
factual, conventional, subjective meanings. Therefore, we would not know if an artwork is
based on a dream unless the artist explicitly mentions it. – But if the picture suggests the
strange, the irrational and the absurd, we can classify it right away as a fantasy or dream
although the artist may not have gotten from the idea of a dream at all but the workings of his
imagination – No limits can be imposed on an artist’s

Activity 2
Direction:
1. Look at the painting below by artist DAVID BAILLY entitled “SELBSTBILDNISMIT
VANITASSYMBOLEN”. List down everything that you see within the four corners of the work.
List as many items as you can in 3 minutes.
• Faces • skull
• stick • faded flower
• painting • glass
• self portrait • bubble
• Woman portrait • candle
• table • book
• papers • sculpture
2. Based on your answers, write an assumption about what the painting means in the space
below.

This painting is made by artist David Baily shown on his prime. As I observed this artwork
full of faces of a person, and the artist painter himself. His also holding stick on his right
hand. Almost all of this artwork that we can see in the painting is made by him also from his
young age until now in his matured age. As I its above this include the portrait of a beautiful
woman and in my assumption it could be the lady that he love’s most or may be his wife. On
the other view we can also seen a long paper with a words inside it or we can call it a letter. I
was also doubting what was this painting message since my first time seeing it. To be honest
I didn’t get it however, the first idea comes into my mind this is a memories from him, It was
sad Yet happy. For me it was emotional. I also saw an extinguished candle, a fragile bubble, a
toppled glass or a faded flower in his table and a skull when we analyze it match more look
like a sign of death, no lives. As my conclusion this Painting message was relaying to us that
our life existence ended in death, moreover only memories left. Life is short and we don’t
know when we will died that is why do your passion creates more memories that we will
treasured forever.

Artist and entrepreneur Sam Roddick, founder of Coco de Mer, explores the enduring appeal
of a Renaissance masterpiece: Botticelli’s Birth Of Venus. To be straightforward I do really
envy her and hoping that one day I can also do the same travel like her. She’s really lucky to
got their to see the original and the fineness art of renaissance masterpieces Botticelli’s Birth
Of Venus.. The ways she describe the painting in front of her, she’s totally amazed by the
talent and skill of the artist who made it. Knowing that this painting for centuries. was
perceived as radical, unknown and shocking in its day, yet is now one of the most celebrated
paintings in Western art. As we also see it is Not just as a symbol of sublime, feminine beauty
but a worldwide icon; reproduced, modified, imitated and reflected on in the work of
countless artists, fashion designers, graphic artists, advertising directors and film-makers.

Looking back to the painting she also include how beautiful women is, the purity and the
gentle heart of the women in the painting and it’s really produces justice and joy to people
who can seen this painting and I’m totally agreed to her. It’s remind us how our woman
