KILDARE OPEN 2008 - Reported by Bill Dobbins

On behalf of myself and Peadar Sweeney, I would like to thank all the players that attended the Kildare Open
Draughts tournament, held on the 16/17 February at the Town House Hotel, Naas.
There were thirty two players in three sections (which was one more player than last year so we are
improving).
In the masters section we had ten players. This was won by Sean Cronin on 14 points ahead of
Shane McCosker on the same points, but on head to head Sean Cronin took three points off Shane.
In third place was Paddy Doyle on 12 points.
In the Seniors we had 14 players and this section was won by Pat Logue, second was Joe Maguire,
third was Tommy Canning and fourth was P J Furey.
In the Intermediate we had 8 players. This section was won by Nancy O'Reilly, second was Terry Kelly,
third was Michael Martin. See Crosstables overleaf for detailed results.
A special Plaque was awarded to P J Furey for his services and contribution to Draughts in Ireland.
Also we had a Plaque for the best supporter and this was awarded to Angela Campbell.
A plaque for the best newcomer was awarded to Julian McGuinness.
We had a number of donations to the tournament from business people. We had a very generous donation
from a well known man from Wexford who wished to remain anonymous, so, next year we will have a cup
for the senior section.
Sponsorship was received from the following:

1. The Computer Shop, Newbridge, Co. Kildare.

2. The Centra Shop, Caragh, Nass, Co. Kildare.
3. Heavey’s Supermarket, Ballymoe, Co. Galway .
4. Byrne’s Garage, Blacktrench, Naas, Co. Kildare.
5. Carroll’s Forecourt Services. Allenwood, Naas. Co. Kildare.
6. A Generous Donation from Co. Wexford. (Anonymous)

IDA Executive Meeting

This was held during the Kildare Open. It was agreed that the bid for the 2008 All Ireland Open to be held in
Dundalk could proceed. The Chairman, Con Me Carrick stated that details of the sponsorship bid and hotel
accommodation would be confirmed in writing, and a brochure/programme published by the time of the
Northern Ireland Open on 25 March. However, to date this has not been confirmed, so far as I am aware.
The nominations for the Beijing Olympics were also discussed and the latest information is that there will be
4 players representing Ireland as follows:
Hugh Devlin, Shane Me Cosker, Garrett Owens and Patricia Breen.
Also, I understand that Myles Hannigan has been nominated for the UK.

NORTHERN IRELAND OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP 2008 - Reported by Gerald Callaghan

All local tournaments in Inishowen were suspended last week owing the Easter Holidays but a number of our
players took part in the Northern Ireland Open Draughts Championships which were held on Easter Tuesday,
Wednesday and Thursday ( 25* - 27* March, ’08 ) in the Kinturk Cultural Centre, Coagh, Co. Tyrone.
A total of 34 players from Donegal, Derry, Tyrone, Antrim, Down, Fermanagh, Monaghan and Mayo took
part in the tournament which consisted of 12 players playing in the masters division and 22 players in the
Senior section. This was a very compact competition with a total of 6 games being played each day during the
3 day event.

Once again it was the master player Shane McCosker from Sion Mills who stole the show with a clear
winning score of 27 points. Strabane’s Myles Hannigan took 2"^* place with Ardboe’s Sean McElkenny
taking 3’^^' spot. Renowned players such as M ayo’s Frank Moran, Antrim’s Paddy Havlin or Tyrone’s
Willie Mulligan could not achieve a podium position, which proves the strength of draughts playing around
the North West.

It was the well known Sean McKenna from Toombridge who became the new Northern Ireland Senior
Champion. Sean is no stranger to being in the winner’s enclosure but it is nice to see him add this bonus
to his curriculum vitae. In second place was the Kildare champion Patsy Logue from Fermanagh.
Patsy is well known in the draughts circles throughout Ireland and appears to be getting better according to his
recent performances. 3rd place went to Donegal’s Con Boyle with Father Denis Dolan from Monaghan taking
4* spot. Fr. Dolan’s brother John was in 5* place.
It is congratulations to Toombridge’s Francis McNally who was the controller of the tournament and
presented quality prizes at the end of a hitch-free event.

Me Cosker becomes Irish 3 Move Champion

Shane Me Cosker from Sion Mills, Co Tyrone, has now become the new Irish 3 Move Matchplay Champion.
He was officially endorsed as the No. 1 challenger for this title last October following his outstanding
performance at the Irish Open Championship where he finished as runner-up to World 3 Move Champion
Alex Moiseyev (USA). Shane immediately issued a challenge to Champion Sean Cronin (Limerick) and the
match was scheduled to be played in March 2008. However, Sean Cronin resigned the title and Shane has
been declared the new champion.
