Neoclassical Art and Romantic Art
Neoclassical Art and Romantic Art
The Neoclassical period lasted from about Neoclassical artists revived and honored the classical
art of ancient Greece and Rome. Neoclassical works of art showed a return to more traditional
times, and encouraged order, reason, and discipline.
-NEOCLASSICAL PAINTING
Based on classical Greek and Roman Art and culture Show heroic people in scenes from or
inspired by ancient history Figures looked idealized and perfect bodies are draped in togas, or in
formal elegant clothing, or are nude. Faces are often clam, without emotion Brush strokes tend
to be smooth, barely visible.
Neoclassicism as manifested in painting was initially not stylistically distinct from the French
Rococo and other styles that had preceded it. This was partly because, whereas it was
possible for architecture and sculpture to be modeled on prototypes in these media that
had actually survived from Classical antiquity, those few Classical paintings that had survived
were minor or merely ornamental works—until, that is, the discoveries made at
Herculaneum and Pompeii.
Neo-classical artists embraced the ideals of order and moderation in which artistic
interpretations of classic Greek and Roman history were restored to realistic
portrayals.

NEOCLASSICAL SCULPTURES
NEOCLASSICAL ARCHITECTURE
is a style that started in the mid-18th century. It turns away from the grandeur of
Rococo style and the Late Baroque.
In its purest form, neo-classical architecture is a style principally derived from the
architecture of Classical Greece and Rome and the architecture of the Italian architect
Andrea Palladio.
1. Temple Style
2. Palladian
The building features a rectangular or square plan, with a flat or roof and
exterior rich in classical detail. The exterior features a repeated classical pattern or series of
arches and/or columns. The over-all impression of such a building is a huge, classically-
decorated rectangular block.
-ROMANTIC PERIOD
CHARACTERISTICS
o Height of action
o Emotional extremes
o Dramatic compositions
The paintings of the Romantic period gave more emphasis on emotion. Artists expressed as
much feeling and passion as it could be on a canvass.
PAINTERS IN ROMANTIC PERIOD
Romantic sculpture can be divided into works that concern about the human world
and that concern the natural world.
